Seeking Info on James Pepper - Essex c1851
« on: Monday 06 August 07 17:26 BST (UK) »
James Pepper was my great granddad and he married Marion Taylor Livingstone on 5th November 1875 in Airth, Stirlingshire, Scotland.

Information taken from the 1851 Census shows James, born in  Aldham, Essex (born out of wedlock) and living with Joseph Warner.

In the 1861 Census James is now with John Check (A Mariner) and is his apprentice.

On the 1871 Scotland Census James Pepper appears aboard The Star Cramond, Midlothian, Scotland aged 24 and his occupation is Fisherman.

On 5th November 1875 James Pepper married Marion Taylor Livinstone on 5th November 1875 (there must have been fireworks that day!) in Airth, Stirlingshire, Scotland.

Can anyone help with James's history during his time in England prior to 1851.

Fingers Crossed,

Hmmm
if he was 24 in 1871, then he was nly 4 in 1851, so we are not talking a lot of 'history' prior to that.

A possible birth:
Oc/Nov/Dec 1839 Billericaly area.

though I dont know what area Aldham is in.

What does he give as father's name on marriage cert? how did 1851 census indicate he was illegitimate? What relation was he to joseph Warner?

you could well be talking parish records for his birth.

Some info on Aldham 9not particualrly near Billericaly, so that birth looks unlikely):

A possibility (but it is 20 miles from Aldham):

1841 HO107/328/6
Church End, Great Dunmow
Maria Pepper, 55+, ag lab, Y
Maria Pepper, 22, Y
Henry Pepper, 20, Y
Mary Pepper, 12, Y

Although I think this is more likely:

1841  HO107/335/1
Aldham
Richard Pepper, 40, ag lab, Y
Mary Pepper, 35, Y
Maria Pepper, 15, Y
Emma Pepper, 10, Y
James Pepper, 20, Y
Richard Pepper, 8, Y
Ellen Pepper, 3, Y
John Pepper, 7m, Y

The baptisms are on IGI

Thanks All,

I posted a reply yesterday but it seems to have gone into cyber space.

Many thanks for your help, which now allows me to move forward with sourcing registered information.

Kind Regards,

John
