Morgan & Worgan
« on: Monday 06 August 07 18:41 BST (UK) »
Hello,
My ggg grandfather's brother, George Morgan born 1817 in Coleford, married Mary Ann Worgan, born 1815, on 8/2/1840.
They had at least three children:
Amelia 1843
Benjamin Parkes 1846
Leah 1848

I have found George and Mary on the 1841 census living close by to George's parents, James & Ann Morgan and his brother, Henry (my grandfatherx3) and his wife, Maria.  But I have been unable to trace them at all after that, with or without their children.

Does anybody recognise the family or can find them on any census after 1841?

Thanks for your help!
Sue

Sue,

Might be an idea to Google for the Forest of Dean FHS and put a message on their board.

Good luck

In the 1851, Henry and Maria have a daughter called Leah, b. 1848.  Could there have been two girls born the same year?

There are two grand-daughters, Eliza and Aby, living/staying the night with James and Ann.

Do you have these details already?  I'll post the info if you haven't.

Hi Monica,
I have all the census returns and it would seem that George Morgan and his wife had at least three children with the same names as his older brother's children, Henry (my grandfatherx3). Amelia, Benjamin Parkes and Leah.
Henry's middle name is also Parkes which is what intially alerted me to search for brother George's children.
The Eliza staying with James and Ann Morgan on the night of the 1851 census belongs to an older brother of Henry and George, James, born 1805.  Aby could be George's Leah as Henry's was with him - confusing isnt it?
I've checked the death register and nothing appears so I don't know what may of happened to them!

Don't you just hate it when the family has done things like that!  It makes life so much more complicated, looking for people in later records when you don't know, for example, if it's Henry's Leah or George's Leah.  Half my Irish family seem to be called either Mary or John so everyone had a describer added to their name - Nursing Mary, Big John or even Mary's John!  Of course, none of these get written in the official records so it's a nightmare sorting them out!

I've had a trawl through the records, like you have, and can't find a sight of any of them.  The only thing I can think of is that they emigrated.  What do you think?

It's a possibility but I don't think so.  I feel I know the family quite well (not personally ofcourse!) and I don't think its something they would do.  In fact, only Moses Morgan, George's nephew and my grandfather x2, born 1843, was the only one to move out of the area!  He migrated North first to Usworth (Washington) pit, then to Newbattle in Scotland before ending up in Durham City.  Quite a hike but he didnt leave the country!!
The only only possibility is that they family may of succumbed to some illness and died,
On that cheerful note, speak later,
Sue !

Don't forget our ancestors can often surprise us!  I have family who hardly moved from the same few villages in Suffolk for generations except for one couple who emigrated to the States and then returned to stay in the same area for the rest of their lives.  I only know this happened, between two censuses, because their first child was born in New York.  I thought it was a transcription error when I first saw it because none of the family seemed to be adventurous.

If there's no trace of George and Mary in the English or Welsh censuses, and no death records, it's worth a look at emigration as a possibility.

Happy hunting,
Monica

There was a Morgan who married a Worgan, and they emigrated to Canada around this time. Not sure if they are the same  couple.
