Cemetery at Brynithel near Abertillery
« on: Tuesday 07 August 07 12:01 BST (UK) »
Hi there,

Does anyone know around what year burials would've started to take place at this cemetery?  It is likely that many of my ancestors from the area have their final resting place there.

I drove past it the other week when I visited nearby St Illtyd's Church and just wondered if anyone has any information about the cemetery at all?

Thanks
Helen

Hi Helen
, Brynithel Cemetery is owned and maintained  by the local  Council, I cant tell you when burials started there but my grandparents are buried there early 1940`s I was born in Abertillery,
There`s been no burials at St Illtyds( Old Church) in my life time in fact if you went there you can see the graves are collapsing. Other Burial site is Christ Church Aberbeeg  on the opposite  mountain to Brynithel
The next Municipal Cemetery would be Blaina Hope I1ve been some help. The Council Offices at Ebbw Vale could tell you how old the Cemetery is I`m sure.

Hi Dragongirl,
Thanks for the info on the cemetaries in the Brynithel area and the best places to contact for information on them  :)

On that visit to the area I mentioned, I did actually visit the old church at St Illtyd's and, as you say, the graves are collapsing!  We did manage to find 3 family gravestones that were very clear and which had not sunk too far - but it was quite a feat to clamber around there in the long grass not knowing exactly when your foot was going to hit the ground - at least the ground was very dry from the good weather and not muddy at all.

Thanks again
Helen :)
