Thomas Tarpy lookup please
« on: Tuesday 07 August 07 14:24 BST (UK) »
Hello to all, newbie here. Stumbled upon this great site.  I'm puzzled and hopefully some one can help.  I know that my 2x greatgrandfather at the age of 23 was married at St. Barnabas Cathedral in 1853 and was living at Smith's Yard in Nottingham.  I have looked for him in various census but can not locate.  He must have been in the area because his son, also Thomas Tarpy, was baptised at St. Barnabas Cathedral in 1863 or 1865.
2x greatdrandfather's father's name was John and was a tenent farmer.  Any help would be appreciated.

I understand Thomas' sr's father should be called John?

There is a Tarpy family at Smith's Yard Nottingham in 1861, headed by Thomas age 54. The whole family is 'out of work'  :( Would you like the details?

Thank you Tati for your rapid response.  Tati the names are correct.  I've never heard of a Polly but she could have passed on and subsequently never mentioned again. Thomas did marry Mary Flannery who also lived at Smith's Yard at the time of the marriage and Thomas had children named James Thomas and Annie.  There may have been another son between James and Thomas.  Also at the time of their marriage it is written that Thomas is a brick laborer, he may have found hawking less labor intensive  ;D.
Yes Thomas' father is named John and Mary Flannery's father's name was Patrick Flannery also a brick laborer. At the time of their 1853 marriage Patrick Flannery was deceased.  This info you have provided is fabulous.
btw what does the do mean after the letter b, which I am assuming means born. I would love to know any details.  The age for Thomas is off in the 1861 census but I understand that is to be expected but it must the Tarpy's still living at Smith's yard.  Thank you kindly

Yes, b. is short for born

I don't think it's your Thomas on the 1861, but they might be related somehow.

1861
RG9/2459 32 29
Nottingham St Mary
Smith's Yard

Thomas Tarpey, head, 54
Cathrine M Tarpey, dau, 15
Sabina Tarpey, wife, 48
Michael Patey Tarpey, son, 19
Mary Patey Tarpey, dau, 15

All out of work and born Ireland

Both Thomas and Mary seem to die between 1871 and 1881:

Death March quarter 1872
Mary Tarpy age 39
Nottingham 7b 197

2 possibles for Thomas, either March 1874 or March 1881.

I suppose you've got Thomas jr. in 1881, along with James?

(give me a shout if the link doesn't work for you)

Polly is a petname for Mary so this could be Polly in 1881:

There's also another Tarpey family at Smith's Yard in 1861:

(same ref page 28)
Thomas Tarpey, head, 50, Labourer, b. Ireland
Catherine, wife, 45, b. do.
Mary, dau, 19, b. do.
Michael, son, 17, Bricklayer, b. do.
Patrick, son, 21, Dyer, b. do.
Ellen, dau, 24, Factory Hand, b. do.
John McDonough, son in law, 25, Bricklayer, b. do.
Thomas do., son, 1, b. Nottingham
Mary do, dau, 2mo, b. do.

They're still not called John  :P

Hi Sheila  :)

The twins didn't survive long  :(

Ellen's death is registered in the same quarter as her birth, and Michael's in Sep 1867  :(
