Hello, Kath

Here we are.

On checking the street index for Sussannah Row I find it is not in Kingsland Rd but in Curtain Rd for both the 1851 & '61 censuses.

I have hard copy of the 1851 census name index for the Shoreditch area.  This shows there are 3 entries for the surname Hale in the Hoxton Old Town area.
HO107/1536  folio  5
This for a a William Hale  age 18, living in Old St.,Shoredtich, b ?Ramsgate
HO107/1536  folio 120
This is for a William Hale Wid age 81 living in Robert St., born Berks.
The third entry was for a female.

Sussnnah Row, Curtain Rd
1851 census
HO107/1534  nth side  folio 309-10
                      sth sife   folio 496

1861 census
RG9/235   Nth side  folio  86-88
                Sth side   folio  47

I have checked all these folio nos but could find no William Hale.

I will check the other Shoreditch areas for William Hale, the index only gives surnames so it means lookng at all of the folios to find a William so it may take a little time.  I will get back to you if I find one.

Meliora

Hello, Kath,

Curtain St is on the western side of Shoreditch High St, reasonably close to St Leonards Church which is at the cross roads of Shoreditch High St , Old St.,Kingsland Rd.& Hackney Rd.  I don't suppose it is two minutes walk from Kingsland Rd.

I did make a note of all the entries for the name of Hale in the Shoreditch area
HO107/1533     9 entries
HO107/1535     8 entries
HO107/1537     4 entries
HO107/1538     6  entries   making a total of 27

I did try Ancestry I found this entry that might be of use.

HO107/1555  folio  563  page 6
High St., Bromley St Leonard.
William Hale  Wid  age 70  Shoemaker  b  Essex  Caleman.
this would have been c 1781

Did the death cert say the person red'ging the death was "present at death" or "in attendence", present at death means exactly that, in attendence means they were simply red'ging the death, not having been there at the moment of death.  It could be anybody, neighbour, relation, friend, not necessarily living near by.

Hope this helps,

Meliora

Thank you for the time you have spent and for your interest.
I get totally confussed with the different areas of London/Middlesex so what you have told me certainly helps.
The death certificate says ''Wm Hale present at the death '' 10 susannah row Kingsland road.
The William Hale who's death it is, I believe is the one which you found on the 1851 census.
He was a shoemaker and at the time of his death he was living 8,Robert street.
The only problem is that they give his age as 83yrs which means he was born in 1770 not 1781 but this does not worry me as it has happened quite a lot when I have purchased a death certificate.I think people just guessed ages.

I really believe that the William Hale present at the death of William Hale was his son or some close relative but were I go from here I do not know.

Meliora, can I ask you if you or anyone else really, knows if Tower Hamlets or Limehouse is in the same area as Shoreditch,st leonard ?

Thank you again for your time I really appreciate all your help
kind wishes Kath

All these places are in the east end of London or in the period you are interested in Middlesex just east of the square mile of the city. Then as today a densely populated area.
This website will give yoiu individual maps of each of the areas of the east end you are interested in

Thank you so much Valda !!!
This will help me soooooooooooo much.
I am from Bury Lancashire and London is a complete mystery to me.I think the areas,as in Lancashire, overlap and change over the years and different people call different areas by different names so this really confusses me.
Thanks again will take a look now.
