Thomas Burke - Meath
« on: Wednesday 08 August 07 10:46 BST (UK) »
Recently discovered my gg grandad was from Co. Meath, no idea what area.  He was born around 1809 and served for 21 years in English army.  I believe he returned to Ireland as my great grandmother was born in Ireland in 1863 and he also had a son called Thomas born Rose Common 1856.  They eventually settled in Yorkshire, then onto Barnes in West London.  I obviously need to visit the National Archive centre but does anyone know how I would go about finding out where exactly he was born, if that's possible.  I don't have any other information on him or my g.grandmother.
Any information would be greatfully received.

Hi Mary,

That's fantastic, thank you.

All I know is that Thomas jr according to the 1881 census was born in Rose(sp) Common, I don't know where my ggrandmother was born in Ireland, but I would imagine he same place.  I know that Thos. snr was a widower for some years and I have never known the name of his wife.

How do I go about looking for these records.  I want to visit Ireland in the near future, what would you suggest I do first?

Regards,

Sandra

Sorry I thought you'd cracked it.

I have no other information except I found an entry for 1861 census which says Thos. snr was married to a Mary and had  five children: Maryane Helen, John Patrick, Charles, Susan and Thomas(5).  The first one seems to have been born in Kent, the rest born in Ireland, but I imagine it was just after he left the army.  Now it says that he was born in Chelmsford, Essex but that's not true, it also says Mary was born in Ireland but not where.

Apart from anything she was a very busy lady and he was making up for lost time after being in the army in Australia and the East Indies for 21 years!!

It looks like  he's the one, thank you so much for you help.  So it looks like I'll be visiting Roscommon pretty soon.  I was beginning to think I'd never find out anything about my great and great great grand parents.

Regards,

Sandra
