Census Lookup 1851 - Greer
« on: Thursday 09 August 07 00:41 BST (UK) »
I have posted detailed info about my grt gpa William John Greer under "Armed Forces (?) - 78th Highlander Regiment, but am thinking a census search might be more beneficial.
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,248993.msg1371826.html#msg1371826

He was born ca 1842, so an 1841, 1851, and maybe 1861 search might help.

Parents are William and Margaret Greer.  Most likely Paisley area.   Last name spelling is how he spelled it, but could be variant such as "Grier".  A few years ago I diligently searched microfiche of Parish Records with no luck.

Thank you.

Often a good idea to post the link to the other thread, then folks have all the information

Have you searched on  www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk for your man? It is pay to view, but you can search for free (can see if there are results but not the results!) You can search wills & see the results for no charge - may be something there for the parents.

Thanks for the hints Trish.  I see why you have all those stars after your name. :D

I have modified the message with the link.

Haven't been to scotlandspeople site for a while, but will check again.

Hi Nick

I did look for your folks on the transcripts I have access to for the census - but could find no sign of any of them  ???  ??? The closest I got was a William born Ireland - parents (I think) John and Margaret

SP transcripts are usually somewhat better & perhaps a death/will for the parents may be found.

Trish

Edit: Quite alot of the census for Scotland is on Freecen - you could try there too - they have good transcripts
