« on: Thursday 09 August 07 21:53 BST (UK) »
Could SKS take a photo of any of these addresses, if they still exist? (19th and early 20th  century Ipswich, 1920s-1930s Leiston/Lowestoft)

41 Grimsey Road, Leiston
62 Roman Road, Lowestoft

Ipswich:
30 St Margaret’s Green
Saracens Head Pub., St. Margarets Green
Garretts Buildings, St Matthews parish
3, Cobden Place
2 Christ Church Street
27 Prospect Road, 35 Prospect Road, 7 Prospect Road, 17 Prospect Road, 33 Prospect Road
16 Borough Rd

Thanks for any help,
Janet

I know that some of the addresses no longer exist

Codden Place (which was just off Woodbridge Road)
if you look at this page it shows where it was because it is now a car park:-)

The Saracen's Head

and I have not heard of Borough Road
I have checked on the 1902 maps and an a more up to date map and cannot find Borough Road :-)

Thanks Margi. Though that's odd; my family were living in Borough Road from c1911. It was somewhere in St Helen's district.

*30 St Margaret's Green - still there.
*Saracens Head Pub - still there but is now called Saracen Business Centre.
30 St Marg's is almost opposite.
*Garrett's Buildings - haven't a clue where they are!! Any other info besides
  St Matthews?
*Cobden Place - as Margi said - a car park (my favourite Indian Restaurant
  just around the corner!)
*2 Christchurch St - difficult to say whether it is still there. A row of Victorian
terraced houses but looks as though two or three may have been
demolished & new ones built where no 2 would be. However, there is single story grey brick  building numbered 2A...still don't know if there is a 2!
*Prospect Road, off Bramford Rd. Still there but I don't know about the
houses as there has been a lot of development around the area. It's very
near the Suffolk Record Office so perhaps someone can have a look when in
 the area.
*Borough Road. Now called Grimwade St. Lots of houses demolished but a few still standing - will have a look to see if 16 is still there.
(Margi - it's on the Town Plan of Ipswich 1883-4 in the back of Frank Grace's 'Rags & Bones' )
Sorry Janet, haven't got a digital camera.

Got you Heph

just looked at 1902 Ornance Survey again (with magnifying glass!!!)
and have found Borough Road

Grimwade Street comes from St Helens to Rope walk and then it is Borough Road,

so there are a few shops opp the college, where peters Ice Cream was  ;D and a few houses further down past the college on the other side..........

Facinating! On the 1883 map there is no road between St Helen's St & Rope Walk - the  Borough Gaol is on the land. As Janet's relis lived there c1911 your 1902 map will be more relevant . So, if we are talking about Borough Road in 1902 being between Rope Walk & Fore St the only houses left which would have been there in 1911 are the 17th C old merchants' houses -  the ones with the marvellous bressummer beams (same side as college) and the double fronted one opposite, next to the old St Clement's Hall...that's if my memory is serving me correctly!

PS I just love Peters icecream!

Prospect Street houses all demolished.
No number 2 Christchurch St.
Houses remaining in Borough Rd, now called Grimwade St, are not low number houses and therefore unlikely to be the ones you were hoping for.
That's all accounted for except Garrett Place!

morning

the fact that they are called Garrett buildings makes me think of the multi occupied buildings (the old tenement type ) which then makes me think that they probably no longer exist

however St matthews covers a large area so perhaps if you could name some of the other address on that census it might lead us in the right direction (that sounds waffly  ;) but i hope you get what I mean)
