1851 Census Lookup Request Please For John Rossiter
« on: Wednesday 15 December 04 07:54 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to track down the following Rossiter family and would appreciate any help.

The family consists  of:-

John Rossiter born about 1815
His wife Mary born about 1813
Mary and Elizabeth, their daughters born in about 1843 and 1845 respectively.

The family left Ireland and went to live in Emmett St Clair in Michigan, USA. Elizabeth aka "Lizzie" married George Christman in Trumansburg, New York in 1867.

The spelling of the Rossiter name may be different as it can be spelt several different ways e.g.Rosseter.

The only other information I have is that they came from either County Cork or Tipperary.

I know that this is very much a "long shot" and hope that someone is willing to take on the challenge.TIA.

best wishes

hi rcuser

Sorry we haven't been able to help you so far on this one.

Have you had a look at all the usual resources I tend to suggest?  ;)

The General Register Office of Ireland

The Public Record Office of Northern Ireland

Irish Roots

The National Library of Ireland

Irish Genealogy

Genealogical Society of Ireland

Irish Ancestors

National Archives of Ireland

Perhaps you would like to have a look at these resources to see if there is anything that might help you.

Please come back with any further queries or to let us know how you get on.

Best wishes

Hi rcuser
Having just read on another thread about fors and against for posting information- I feel that every little helps- you never know!
If you are sure re Cork/Tipperary then this is no help!
However, thinking of John's age when Griffiths Valuation took place, I looked at http://www.failteromhat.com/  -- this took place in 1850s.
lots of Rossiters in Wexford (just realised - wonder if it something to do with the place  New Ross etc). I tried variations on the name and only came up with one other 'Rositer' in Laois - no Roseter/Rosseter. The 1901 census (not complete) at http://www.leitrim-roscommon.com/1901census/  again shows several Rossiters in Wexford.
I know this isn't much help in tracing your family- but one other thing - have you looked at the families around them in Michigan. In my very limited experience of USA emigration, (same village - but lots of emigrants) I have seen  streets full of neighbours from back home in Ireland and others emigrating later to them.
I wish you luck in your searches

Hi Heywood,

Thanks for the post and your best wishes . I use familysearch daily but when ancestors come from Ireland it's very difficult to find them, so every bit of information or website link really helps.

Thanks again.

Best wishes
