Farl Mc Farlane
« on: Saturday 11 August 07 11:33 BST (UK) »
Born in Currie, Edinburgh on 12 June 1878. Parents were John McFarlane and Sarah Cunningham.

On 1881 Census he is recorded as Farley

On 1891 Census he is recorded as Farrel

ON 1901 Census he is recorded as Farrell

I cant trace him after 1901 i.e. marriage or death

Would he be too old to have gone to war?

Hi sancti  :)

My grandfather was born 1866 and my great uncle in 1878 and they both served in WW1, so he was not too old!

Have you checked the National Archive WW1 Medals list:

Have you checked for marriages/deaths in England & Wales or abroad?

There's Free BMD which is not too good after 1910, Ancestry full BMD (which is partial) or Find my Past: http://www.findmypast.com/home.jsp which has them all in quarters (Mar, June, Sept, Dec) to 1884 and by date after that. The last two are not free.

The England and Wales system is not as easy because you'll have to search through alphabetic lists.

I've just had a look for marriages in Midlothian but can only find Francis. A full Scottish search brings up a Farquhar  :( Could he have changed his name  ???

In 1891 census he is a scholar living with his father

In 1901 he is a Whinstone breaker living on his own aged 22

I've tried marriages and deaths on SP but cant find anything

Its possible he emigrated I suppose

Have you tried the various emigrant ships lists on Ancestry and other sites?
