Catherine Birgin - Kilkenny
« on: Sunday 12 August 07 23:35 BST (UK) »

Have found some different info and I am hoping that someone may be able to help me find any information regarding a Catherine Birgin born abt 1824  Kilkenny , Ireland.

The marriage certificate has Catherine Birgin  age 21yrs - Parents  John Birgin Farner and Mary Cassion Dairymaid. The marriage took place in Heathcote Victoria Australia.

It has on  birth certificates different spellings such as Bergin, Berigan  Berigine, Baragin and Baragine.

I may be asking a lot but I do hope that somebody just may be able to help???  :)

Kind Regards
Annette ::)

To avoid duplication of effort, I will just mention the following relevant thread:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=249513

Annette, as suggested on that thread, further sources of information will be:

a) the 1906 death certificate of Cath JOHNSON, m.s. BERGIN; the index gives her father as John BERGIN and should also list his occupation and how many years Catherine had been in Victoria

b) the 1856 marriage certificate in Victoria Australia of Catherine BIRGIN to Peter William JANSSEN; this should list the name and occupation of Catherine's father and the name and maiden name of her mother.

PS: If you search on the following site
http://www.ireland.com/ancestor/
you will see that the name - usually spelled BERGIN - was not uncommon in Ireland.

Christopher,

To help you get an even clearer picture ...

Apart from the thread 'John Birgin - County Kilkenny' at:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,250191
which describes Catherine as b ca 1835, as from Kilkenny and as the daughter of John BIRGIN, farmer, and Mary CASSION, dairymaid, see also the following thread for the spellings of both surnames in the Griffith Valuation.  It is at:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,249513

To quote myself:
"...  in the Griffith Valuation in Ireland, there are no BIRGINs.
The only variants in the GV are BERGIN and BERGAN; BERGIN is the only spelling in Co Kilkenny in the GV.

Similarly there are no CASSIONs in the GV.
Possible variant spellings in the GV include CASHEN, CASHIN, CASSAN, CASSIN, CASSEN, CASSON, MCCASHEN, MCCASHIN, MCCASHION, MCCASSAN.
The only spellings in the GV in Co Kilkenny are CASHEN, CASHIN and CASSIN."
