George Hoather c1793 Lewes
« on: Monday 13 August 07 20:14 BST (UK) »
I wonder if anyone can help with the birth/baptism, parents of George Hoather born c1793 Lewes. I have all the census information about him. He married Ann Edstrom on 15th March 1823. She came from Lyndhurst but I do not know where the marriage took place.

I know there were a lot of Hoathers from Sussex but I am trying to find how this one (my 3g grandfather) fits in with a family tree of Hoathers that someone has produced.

Thanks Thelma

Hello Thelma,

According to the Sussex Marriage Index, they were granted an Archdeaconry of Lewes Marriage Licence on 15th March 1823. Goerge is given as bachelor, of All Saints, Lewes and Ann as spinster of Brighton. (From Sussex Record Society vol. 25)

The marriage took place at Brighton on 19th March 1823. I assume at St Nicholas by the absence of any other information. Maybe some-one else will know if this was the only parish church in Brighton at the time.

There is no other information on there, such as witnesses, etc to give any clues to his parents.

Regards,
Phil

Thanks Phil
That gives me a bit more information. Are there likely to be more details about parents anywhere? I have a newly found cousin in Brighton who is quite willing to look things up if I can suggest what he needs to look for!
Thanks for your help Thelma

Hi Thelma

Have you tried www.familyhistoryonline.co.uk it has quite a lot of Sussex baptisms and might be worth a try.

Or the other option is of course the parish registers at the Sussex Record Office at Lewes not far from Brighton.

Thanks kerry.
I have tried family history online and all the other obvious sites but nothing. I can see a trip to Lewes being arranged!
Thanks for your help.
