Hi,
   on my 1871 Census under occupation it say's.. V3 Barman,any idea's what V3 means?

I think its a 'tally mark' type addition - made when the Returns were being analyzed - maybe some sort of categorisation ?

Looks like different hand neways ...

Usually such annotations are made by the clerks in the census office when catagorising occupations and extracting statistics. In the 1871 Census occupations were catagorised into 6 Classes, ( I,II, III, IV, V, VI) containing 18 Orders and 81 sub-orders. However Class V has Orders from 10 to 15, with 47 sub-orders. The Orders run consecutivly from 1 to 18, so Order 3 is in class 1, therefore V3 does not appear to mean an occupational code. I hope that this is clear  :)
