i think i have found it:~

Gladys Lilian M Read Q3 1907 Portsmouth 2b 532

OK , had a recap

We were looking for a birth of Lillian Steele , maybe 1907 (her death indicates that date, by then she was married to Cain)

A possible marriage for father Leonard to an Ellen Read was found in 1910
this would make Lillian born before the marriage

Lillian had a sister Kathleen, also married a cain
We successfully found her birth entry.

Also found an Ethel Steele, with mum's maiden name Read.  

Was she another sister - or was the Steele / read marraige not th eright one?

NOW - having got Kathleens birth cert, it reveals that mums maiden name WAS Read -
So

we have now added evidence that

a) the Steele / Read marriage is the right one
b) there was a third sister
c) Lillian was born before the marriage

did you see the 1907 birth i found for Lilian under the name of Gladys Lilian M Read? i'm pretty sure this has to be the right one, right qtr right year right names although in the worng order. yes the reg distrcit was Portsmouth but who's to say that Ellen was in London in 1907, she was there for her marriage and the birth of Kathleen that we know.

maybe we need to find Ellen on the 1901 census Linda said she was possibly Irish which would help narrow it down. maybe she came to England from Ireland already pregnant in 1907 and landed in Portsmouth where she had Lilian.

re Ethel i'm not sure if she was a sister, there were other Read / Steele couples around at the same time the BMD is telling me.
