Shipping records
« on: Wednesday 15 August 07 06:13 BST (UK) »
 Hi,
My GGG-Grandfather James Cormack was a ship master who used to run merchant shipping from Wick, Caithness to Leith in the mid 1800s.  I was wondering if anybody had any idea how to go about finding records of this. All I have found so far is in the Am Baile website searching the John O'Groats Journal which names the ships and basically sounds like an advertisment for anyone wanting to travel or move merchandise between the two cities.
James "disappears" in the 1871 census because his wife (Margaret Green) is listed as a widow, she isn't in 1861 but James isn't listed then either. I have been unable to find a death record though and am assuming he was lost at sea.
Any help, tips etc would be great!

Bec,
Australia.

Information to date suggests:  In 1851 at the age of 27 he was Master of the "Brave" ticket number 37209.

Hopefully this will be confirmed and maybe added to in time.

Thanks James - great info  :)

I think I have found James Cormack's death thanks to another rootschat member. It
appears he died in St George (Leith) in 1869, although it is only circumstantial.  Not sure
what he died of though as it's very difficult to read!

That's pretty funny Tricia...that's my Dad  ;D

He has some of the info I've found but has been spending more time researching the English/Indian side

Thanks for posting it though...I'll have to tell him!
