Which parish belongs where and when?
« on: Wednesday 15 August 07 12:50 BST (UK) »
I have seen a down load somewhere giving a 'Parish locator'.  For example: how many small villages belong to say, Bray?  As we all know things changed over the years and I am getting very confused.
Anyone know what I'm talking about?

It can be confusing - you are not alone. This may not be exactly what you are after, but it may help until someone comes up with something better:

There is something called parloc (short for parish locator) but a quick google has just got me confused, so I will be interested to read the responses you get to your question.

Hi there,

I've downloaded Parloc it was what I was thinking of.  But, and it's a big but, I now need instruction on how to use it!  So now I'm looking for a Parloc instructor!  Any offers?

thanks for finding it,
Abiam

Parloc will not do what you were asking for.

It contains a list of parishes - it does not give the hamlets within a parish.

The parishes are located into counties as of 1538-1850ish - many parishes have changed county since but this is a fair compromise for those looking for parish registers. A better compromise would have been to include the changes up to 1970 as these are the counties that County Record Offices tend to represent. For instance it gives Combe, Hampshire. Combe changed to Berkshire in 1895 and the records are held in the Berks RO.

However, it is a very useful program for finding adjacent/nearby parishes or indeed finding whereabouts a parish is.

To find hamlets you need a good gazetteer or use a map (eg www.streetmap.co.uk) to find the hamlet and look around for the nearest church or three - it will usually be served by one of those.

Angie,
I don't know where he was born!  Wife Elizabeth was born 1776 in Warfield, 1801 married in Winkfield and died in Cookham In 1865 (Bray I think).
You didn't say what BW.s means.

Newburyboy,
Thanks for that - I'll look at your map link.

Regards to both, Abiam
