Hi Deb, Thanks for pointing me in the direction of this thread! Funnily enough, I've just been doing some work on the Palmers!!  ;D

OK, Firstly Ann Woolcock was buried on the 10th Dec 1868 in St Erme aged 84.

The reason she is hard to find in the 1861 census is because she is down as NANCY PALMER, and her birthplace is given as LADOCK!! Her burial is under the name Nancy too.  ::)

She states her age as 77 in the 1861, which given her varying ages means her baptism could be anywhere from 1774- 1786. My guess is that it's probably around the same time as her husband Matthew who was baptised 14 Dec 1777.

She is living with Thomas and Elizabeth BAWDEN (27 & 22 respectively), and their 2 young sons. I haven'tfigured out yet if the BAWDEN'S are related, but there are more of them in the surrounding pages..

BUT the very next entry is a Francis WOOLCOCK (46, born St Erme), wife Mary A (48) and 7 children ranging from 22 year old Eliza to 5 year old PHILIP!

Another Cornish Mystery!!  ;D

Hi everyone ...

this is so strange ... i am talking to 2 cousins ... Britgirl and Krissy wow LOl

This is getting confusing , yet again we have names used over and over.

In 1841 in st Erme I find these people:

Francis Woolcock 50
Ann 50
Nancy 15
Jane 10
Philip 13
Francis (female) 10
Caroline

also in St Erme in 1841
Matthew PALMER 60
Ann PALMER (nee Woolcock) 55
next door:
Philip WOOLCOCK 40 retail brewer
Mary 40
Mary 15
Henry 11
Elizabeth 6
Ann 3
Jane 1

on the next page:
Frances WOOLCOCK 25
Mary 25
elizabeth 2
mary 9 months

the record that Kris found of NANCY WOOLCOCK bapt. 20 Apr 1783 parents William  and Frances , looks great to me .... but William WOOLCOCK = Frances COAD in 1781, Ladock. Maybe it took 2 years for them to Christen Nancy/Ann Woolcock.

deb :) :) xx

I'd say the last family, Francis & Mary with daughters Elizabeth & Mary are the same ones living next door to Nancy Palmer in 1861.

Deb, sometimes they delayed baptising their children, then had them done in 'batches', especially if the church was some distance away, like I have in one of my Truro lines. Unfortunately they don't always put the age of the child either.

So it is possible that Ann was a few years old when she was done.
But that is assuming she is the oldest child of William and Frances.

The only other child for this couple in Ladock, on the IGI, is William WOOLCOCK chr 3 Oct 1784. I suspect there is also a daughter called Frances hiding somewhere too.

While it isn't conclusive that these are the right parents for our Ann, the names, places and dates are all looking promising!!  ;D

Hi Julia

In 1851
Matthew (73), Ann (67) and Richard (25) PALMER are in church Town, St Erme ... a few houses away , yet again , are Francis (35) and Mary A (37) WOOLCOCK and family . Their children are:

Elizabeth 11
Mary J 10
Thomazine 8
James P 6
Elizabeth 2 (b Bodmin)
Francis som 11 months

I wonder if one of their children married a Bowden.  Elizabeth Woolcock , above, is 11 in 1851 she would be 21/22 in 1861 when Nancy Palmer is living with the Bawden couple and family.

umm just looked for a Woolcock/Bawden marriage ... no luck

back to the drawing board  :-\ ::)

Hi again

Re: the BAWDEN puzzle

In 1861 Thomas Bawden states he is 27 and born st Erme, (married to an Elizabeth , aged 22).

IGI extracted
Thomas Bawden
18 May 1834
parents: John Bawden and Eliz

hopefully we can find a link through his parents, if there is any link to be found.

Hi Deb,

Just popping in briefly to share what I've recently learned.

I emailed the OPC's for Cornelly and Ladock parishes. No Ann /Nancy WOOLCOCK found in either, or in Probus which is linked with Cornelly.

However the OPC for Ladock threw some light on William WOOLCOCK & Frances COAD.

Married 7 Jan 1781
Son William chr 3 Oct 1784

William WOOLCOCK (widower) m Mary HOCKEY 17 Sep 1792

A Mary WOOLCOCK died in 1794

A William WOOLCOCK m Mary Ternough 13 May 1795
Son Philip chr 7 Mar 1798

Of course, there is no guarantee that the marriages are all the same William, but it's a strong possibility, especially with the 1792 record actually stating he was a widower, and the death of a Mary fairly close to another marriage.

I think it's fairly certain this family moved around the local area a bit. Frances must have died in another parish, and I would assume there are baptisms of other children scattered around too, if we can just link them together!
