Emma Esther Masters b1821 Guernsey
« on: Thursday 16 August 07 08:51 BST (UK) »
Hi,
Can anyone help me with information on Emma Esther Masters please?
We would like to find her birth around 1821, and her marriage to Robert Smith (of Somerset, England) sometime between 1841 and 1850.

She is visible in later census years as Emma Smith

Also her parents. They MAY have been WILLIAM MASTERS, son of James
Marriage: 26 AUG 1804 Saint Peter Port, Guernsey, Channel Islands
Wife MARY LANGLOIS

But this is only guesswork - we have no firm evidence.
Thanks

Thanks, that is a good start. I knew she was there in 1841, but had not seen the census details.

Hi Pavane,

How's this research vein flowing for you?
Think I can help.

--------

Emma's marriage is post-1837.
Its details will be recorded in the Civil Registration lists for England.

I had a quick look for it via www.freebmd.org .
[N.B. Its database is not complete yet.]

Searching from Q/E Mar-1841 to Q/E Dec-1851 threw up only one possible match with a SMITH:

    Marriages Q/E Jun 1845
SMITH, William       Shepton Mallett    10 751
MASTERS, Emma    Shepton Mallett    10 751

[However, it is not certain that these two married.
Other male candidates on that page are CUZNER, HISCOX & WHITE.  To me, the lady's name looks more like "Ann" in the scanned image of the index register's page.]

Shepton Mallett is near Wells in Somerset.

Perhaps your "Robert SMITH" was a "William Robert SMITH" ...

--------

I'd be interested in hearing more about Robert SMITH.
What did he do?
Why did Emma marry him, moving away from Guernsey.

--------

In return I can open the door on the Guernsey scenario for you.
[ ... and elsewhere, earlier ...]

Firstly (VIP): Do you know anything about BERRYMANs or WILLIAMSONs?!

Thanks for your suggestions. This is not going well at the moment, I have heard nothing new since my post.

Whether or not they married in England, the couple certainly moved back to Guernsey before the 1851 census, and their daughter Emma L (aka Louisa?) was born there in 1848, according to the census (Not always accurate!).

I am not sure that I could reconcile William Smith in Shepton Mallet with Robert Smith, and they didn't name any children William, as might be expected. The one slight possibility we have for Robert is son of Charles and Maria Smith in Kilmington, and their second son was named Charles.

Is this a pattern?
First daughter named after mother (Emma Louisa)
First son named after father (Robert)
Second son after grandfather? (Charles)
Second daughter Allice Eliza - Maybe after her maternal grandmother?

Third son - Percy - maybe after maternal grandfather?

So are we looking for Percy and Alice Masters?

There were also Isabella, Lilian and Bertha, but no more boys.

I would love to hear more about Robert myself, all we have is a name and occupation (Draper).
We have only a little more about his son Robert George, including photos. He does seem to have invented a background for himself which became a family legend, but has no basis in reality! Tales of being descended from a SIR Robert Smith, distinguished military man and linguist, speaking 19 languages, of whom we find no trace. Supposedly with a street named after him in Guernsey (But even if there is a Smith street, I'm sure it wasn't him!)

Percy also moved to London, and was living in Maylebone in 1901, which is the last news we have of him.

I would be interested to hear anything more you have, but as you see, I can't offer much in return. By the way, Robert George Smith was my great-grandfather.

Above and beyond the call of duty, I call that.
Really excellent, and much appreciated, cousin.
I will see if my other contacts and cousins can add anything now.
