Hi Adrian,
The only information I can find on John Cloy C. 15 Aug 1847 Mochrum, Father William Cloy m. McCulloch from the IGI and on the births for Mochrum
CLOY John on 21 April 1847 at Not Stated to William Cloy and McCulloch.
I don't know if this is your John, can't find him on the census for 1851. Do you have any other information on him?

Hi Adrian,
I have sent for the full transcription for the John Cloy birth Mochrum, so I will wait and see if there is anymore info. on it. Have you checked the 1851 census? There are some Cloys in Old Luce.
Will let you know when I get a reply

Hi Adrian and Beenie

Given that John's birth was illegitimate, I wonder if this is him in 1851 with his maternal grandparents under the name of McCulloch - everyone showing as born in Mochrum:

James McCulloch 51, thatcher
Anges McCulloch 51
Jane McCulloch    21, general serv.
Janet McCulloch 14, daughter
Agnes McCulloch 6, daughter
John McCulloch    4, grandson

Address: Boghouse, Mochrum

If we have the right family, hard to say who his mother could be at this stage...Jane showing above or another daughter to James and Agnes?

Do you know where John married, have you tried to find his marriage or death certs.?

Regards.

This looks like the McCulloch family above in 1841, with a few more possibilities. Standard rounding down of ages for everyone over 15, down to the nearest 5yrs:

James McCulloch 35, agr. lab.
Agnes McCulloch 35
Elizabeth McCulloch 15
John McCulloch    14
Jane McCulloch    10
Adolphus McCulloch 6
Mary McCulloch    8
Janet McCulloch 4
Alexander McCulloch 3
Andrew McCulloch 6 weeks

Address:  Cruders Keog, Mochrum

In respect of father William Cloy, there are at least two possible entries for him in Wigtownshire in 1841, down to 1 by 1851.

Hi
Thanks Monica and Joe for your help with this, I also found a William Cloy in 1841 in Stoneykirk, but born in Kirkmaiden. I hope this helps Adrian with his search. We can only try our best.
Thanks again
