I need help with Henry Mason please
« on: Sunday 19 August 07 13:47 BST (UK) »
Hello All

I have Henry Mason with wife Hannah, grandson Henry Winsper and Brother-in-law John Vickerstaff in 1861 in Haughton, Staffs, all described as "Travellers".

I have Henry Winsper with his parents in 1851 then he reappears in 1881 in prison in Kent.

Can't find John Vickerstaff - which I believe should be Bickerstaff/Biggerstaff, anywhere else.

Although I've found Henry & Hannah's marriage entry on the IGI, I can't find them on any other census.

If anyone can find Henry & Hannah Mason in any other census than 1861, I would be very, very grateful.

Here's hoping
Regards

As they were travellers it could well be that they were missed off the censuses due to them moving sites, the 1861 has them as 'not living in a house' suggesting the had a travelling caravan (or such) but were stationary and found by the inumerator.  I think it is likely that they were missed off.

Where is the marriage entry on IGI, what info does it give - I can't find it. It may narrow down they could be hiding in 1841/51!

Hmmmm I'm a little confused with the 1881 and Henry Winsper being in prison.  The guy in Chatham Prison is George Henry Winsper, born 1842 in Oldbury Worcestershire....
Your guy was Henry Winsper born 1851 in Dudley.

However there is a Henry Winspur born 1853 in Birmingham, a pauper, at the Birtmingham Workhouse.  He was an Iron Moulder.  That seems to fit better than the prisoner...

Or maybe I have got it wrong!! :)

Just found Henry Winspur, born 1850 at Bilston, Staffs a convict at HM Prison Borstal, in Rochester, Kent....is that your guy?
He is married and a collier.  The only Henry Winspur marriage I can find is in 1882 though...

Hello Legs

The IGI entry for the marriage of Hannah Bickerstaff and Henry Mason 26 December 1837 at St. Phillips, B.ham - no other details.

I believe Hannah is the sister of my g.g.g.gmother Mary Adams ( nee Bickerstaff).

The Henry Winsper with Henry & Hannah in 1861 is not Hannah's grandson, but her sister Mary's grandson.

Henry Winsper was the son of George Winsper & Sarah (nee Adams).  George & Sarah were also sometime travellers - in a caravan.

I believe Hannah and Mary and John Vickerstaff - siblings - were born Stratford upon Avon.

The IGI entry for the marriage of Hannah Bickerstaff and Henry Mason 26 December 1837 at St. Phillips, B.ham - no other details.

The marriage certificate will have additional details though. I'd certainly recommend getting hold of a copy to prove your theory one way or the other.
