Sears -Manea/Chatteris
« on: Monday 20 August 07 10:49 BST (UK) »
I have traced a Michael Linford Sears, born Chatteris around 1815. His parents were Richard and Ann, Richard being born around 1779 (detauils from 1851 census).

Parish records held by Cambs Family History Society show that he had 3 sisters - Anne C (1811-1816), Susan (1820-?) and Anne (1817-?) - and a brother, John (1808-?). Their parents were Richard and Ann.

Thanks to bedfordshire boy's research of parish records held by him, the following information has come to light -

a Richard Sears, son of Thomas and Mary, was baptised 25 March 1781 at Chatteris;
a Mary Sears, daughter of Thomas and Mary, was baptised 25 March 1781 at Chatteris (no indication of whether twins or one or both had late baptisms);
a John Sears, son of Thomas and Mary, was baptised 19 December 1773 at Chatteris.

There is also a marriage recorded between Richard Sears and Ann Cooper at Chatteris on 30 November 1805. Witnesses were John Sears (brother mentioned above?) and Elizabeth Smith.

As far as Thomas and Mary are concerned, Thomas lived 1742 - 1816 and Mary 1743 - 1799.

Any further information would be warmly welcomed.

Thanks

Phil Sears

Hi Phil

Welcome to Rootschat!

Copy of PM sent to Phil earlier today below for the benefit of other potential Sears researchers, now or in the future.

"Can't help with Manea data I'm afraid as I don't have the transcript

From Chatteris
Richard Sears baptised 19 June 1774 son of Richard & Sarah. Buried 8 Jul 1774 son of Richard & Sarah
Richard Sears baptised 25 March 1781 son of Thomas & Mary
and on the same day, 25 March 1781, Mary dau of Thomas & Mary, but no indication whether they were twins or whether one, or both, was a late baptism. She was buried on 20 Nov 1784
John Sears bap 19 Dec 1773 son of Thomas & Mary

Burial 2 Apr 1799 Mary Sears age 56, wife of Thomas, farmer of Mount Pleasant

Marriage 30 Nov 1805 Richard Sears bach and Ann Cooper spinster both otp by licence witnesses John Sears (might this have been Richard's brother, as above?), Elizabeth Smith, Thomas Camps who was an official

Also buried at Chatteris
2 Nov 1808 John Cooper Sears infant son of Richard and Ann, farmer of Manea
25 May 1816 Thomas Sears 74 farmer of Fodder Fen near Manea
1 Dec 1816 Ann Sears age 5 dau of Richard & Ann, farmer of Fodder Fen nr Manea

To sum up I think Richard who married Ann Cooper was the son of Thomas and Mary, baptised in 1781 "

It might be worthwhile checking with Cambridge Record Office to see if they hold a will for Thomas Sears who died 1816

Regards

David

Hi Phil

A bit more information on your Chatteris Sears, all taken from Chatteris parish register transcript:

John Sears married Mary Godfrey 23 Oct 1737 (the first mention of  Sears in Chatteris other than a burial of an unnamed Sears? …of James in 1726))

Baptisms of children of John and Mary
Richard 5 Nov 1738
Mary 30 Nov 1740
Thomas 30 Jan 1742/3
John and Francis 30 Sept 1744 (John, son of J & M, buried 26 Oct 1744)

Mary, widow, buried 26 Nov 1769. No sign of a burial of John.

I can’t see the marriage of Thomas and Mary in either Chatteris PR or on the IGI, and there’s no banns in Chatteris either

Baptisms of children of Thomas and Mary
John 19 Dec 1773
Elizabeth 30 Jun 1776
Richard and Mary 25 March 1781 (Mary buried 20 Nov 1784)

Thomas, son of Thomas and Mary buried 28 Oct 1785 (no trace of a baptism)

Thanks for this - adds some information to relatives already identified. Now stuck at John Sears (married to Mary Godfrey) born Chatteris around 1715 but no apparent record of his parents in Chatteris.

As there were no Sears entries in Chatteris pre 1726 that must imply that John was born elsewhere. The problem is where!
