OAP records
« on: Tuesday 21 August 07 14:38 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know were you can get access to OAP records if such a thing exists.  Would the Pensioner be entitled to their money while in the local Work/Poorhouse ???

There were no such thing as pensions payments until the 20th century, so any records of payment to the poor would be in the Guardian's of the Poor Minute Books (workhouse records).

For wealthier ancestors, you might find payments of dividends from investments, presumably these would be among the records of the company concerned or of the solicitor or accountant dealing with the person;s financial affairs.

I hope others have some ideas to help you, but the date would be the crucial information to supply.

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

The records of the poorhouse may be held here:

West Lothain Local History Library,
Library HQ,
Hopefield Road,
Blackburn
West Lothian EH47 7HZ
Tel. 01506 776331
E-mail: localhistory[at]westlothian.gov.uk

It would be worth checking with them - replace the [at] with @
