Just to say thankyou, and let you know the Fairhurst Donbavand link is confirmed.
Isaac and Annie were sponsors at the baptisms of some of Margaret and William (Hargreaves) children. This is the link to the New Zealand post

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,251829.0.html

If any one can help with the other Donbavand or Fairhurst families mentioned as sponsors i would really appreciate a direction to look in.

I still don't understand the giving of one name and then using the second ie Registered as Margaret Jane but on the census as Jane.
Jody

Hi jody 101,
just thought i'd let you know that my mother and a great many ancestors were born and bred in Yorkshire and it was usual practice in many area's to give at least the first male and female born two names and they were allways known by their second name, ie: my mother Catherine Marion has always been Marion and most of my aunt's and uncles were known similary by their second name ???....confusing i know but worth remembering when dealing with Yorkshire folk!
as a Brummie it still seems odd to me!

  cheers Tony

Thanks Tony,
my mother in-law did that to her children(thought she would start a new fashion) but she was 4th gen Australian.  It does make it very confusing though when you can only work with bdm's and census.
Do you know if there was a practice of naming the children? ie 1st son after paternal grandfather 2nd son after maternal grandfather.

It has all the possibilities of being him. The only problem i can see is that he was 20 in 1841 and 25 in 1851 (so i guess he rounded up for the 1st and then down for the 2nd)
It does cause a problem with the submitted entry though.
Is Ince near Altrincham in Cheshire?

Hi Jody,
There is an Ince approx 12 miles NNE of Chester and about 20 miles ESE of Altrincham...but there is also an Ince on the Eastern outskirts of Wigan!
Regarding the Yorkshire naming of siblings, in my family at least there doesn't realy seem to be any particular pattern.  ::) my eldest uncle took his fathers name as his first name but was known by his second...and my eldest aunt took her paternal grandmothers name but was known by her second name! It all seems a bit random and down to which name suited i guess!
They certainly didn't consider making things easier for the likes of us later generations sadly   :(

It may be worth a look at www.donbavand1.freeserve.co.uk. There are several families in West Yorkshire, and Barry Donbavand has been digging around for some time.
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.

Census information is Crown Copyright. See www.nationalarchives.gov.uk for details.
