Our town cemetery opened 1856 and was originally in two parts divided by a central path. It was designed with consecrated ground (Church of England) on the left, and unconsecrated ground (Non Conformist including Roman Catholic) on the right and each had its own chapel. In view of Koromo’s posting was this perhaps the fashion at that time? Later, presumably as it filled up, the system appears to have been abandoned here as I have an ancestor known to have been a regular CofE attendee buried on the right! Latterly with a new extension any form of segregation seems to have ceased altogether. The first internment was of a boy aged 2 from the Union Workhouse. The fourth was the builder of the chapels. He was thrown from his horse whilst inspecting the work and died from his injuries a few days later.
