1851 census Glamorganshire
« on: Sunday 26 August 07 18:53 BST (UK) »
A higher place in heaven is deserved by anyone who can find my HUGHES family in the 1851 census!!!!!!  I have literally put in over two hundred hours on this one quest, and I have searched all over the Wales counties.

Like all seekers, I have tried every combination of the name Hughes, I've searched just the Harriets, just the Thomases, just the Sarahs, etc.  I have always come up with nothing!!!!  I even searched England....thinking they might have slipped over the border to see relatives or friends there......still nothing!!!
I do not know Sarah's maiden name.....have sent for birth certificates and hope they will reveal more information.

These are my 3x great grandparents and are found in the 1861 census in Aberdare.  At that time they had daughters, Harriet, age 15, Ann, age 11, and two younger girls:
Father: Thomas Hughes, 42, fireman, born Carmarthenshire, Pembrey
Mother: Sarah, 33, born Glamorganshire, Lantwit
Daughter: Harriet, 15, born Glamorganshire, Baglan
Daughter: Ann, 11, born Glamorganshire, Margam
        and two other girls

In 1867, the family emigrated to the U.S. and I have documented most all of them from 1870 to 2007.

 ???

Thank you so much for searching.....I think my Thomas must have been closer to 32 in the 1851 census.  But I always learn something new from good people like you and you have shown me another way to search that I had not tried!!!!

Thank you,
Barb3

Hello Barb,
I have been looking at the Glam 1851 for you which is the only one I have..
Several Thomas Hughes about the right age on their own.could he have been working away from home at that time ? Family elsewhere.
I have also tried to find a Hugh Thomas as my own great grandparents family had their surname transposed on the census.
Will have another look when I get back from the shops.
Carrie.

just another thought did you try looking for Thomas Do (as in Ditto)? but I thought searching for birth place and year of birth +/- 2 or 3 years would have found him!

Thank you Carrie Ann......yes, I had thought that the young family might have been found in separate places.  And I also found several Thomases who fit his profile....all of them alone in 1851.  But, I was then hoping to find wife, Sarah, somewhere with her two small children,,,,,,Harriet and Ann.

Thank you so much for your help.

To Newbie:  I will try the Do....it is sometimes amazing what the transcribers will do!!!!!!   Thank you!!!

Can`t find them on the Glam 1851 I`ve had another look.
Do you have a birth certificate for Harriet ?
Maybe Thomas  was married to someone else in 1851 and marrried Sarah later.
Harriet`s birth certificate would show if that was so.
Good hunting,
Carrie.

Excellent thought......this is why having other people look at your problem is so rewarding.  I will send for a birth cert for Harriet and see what comes of it.

Thank you,
Barbara
