Hi Trees,
Sorry but the only crown pub in Abingdon i knew was in Ock Street but that was made into flats a few years back. I wonder if that info you got on the Crown gave the wrong street. On the website i gave above the Crown is mentioned there as Ock Street also and i know it was around late 1800s as ive been researching my family from Abingdon. If i can find out anything i will let you know.
                                       Regards
                                         Sue

Good point Jamajo

just had another look at the 1871 census sheet and it was on the corner of  Bury Lane and carnt work out the other street but looking at the sheet it was beside another pub  called Black Swan I think .  The landlord  was Frederick Hickman?, Bury Lane was renamed Bury Street on the 1881 census

Hi Ricky,
The Black Swan pub is still here and its in Bath Street but i never knew about The Crown. I got given this site on a forum www.aaahs.org.uk when looking into my family and found it really good. Its all about Abingdon so hope it might help you Trees. You will see photos of the almshouses on there so you will have some idea of where your family lived.

Hi Sue

is there a Bury Lane/Street still there or is that now Bath Street, cos on the 1871 it def says Bury Lane, and when I looked at the 1881 it says Bury Street, formerly Bury Lane

Hi Sue,
Those are great links many thanks what a mystery this pub is turning into I think I'll ask the History folk if they fancy looking into it for me.
The Youngs are precariously hanging on to a twig way out on my tree  ;D
It goes like this
William Young b 1772 Kirtlington was a butcher and publican married to Francis BAYLIS
They had 7 children of which 3 sons are of interest.
Richard 1807 became a butcher and Publican Dog Inn School Rd, Kidlington
William 1815 became a butcher and Publican Crown Inn?? Abingdon
John 1820 became a butcher and Publican  Bell Hampton Poyle

The Bell in H,P. had been kept by my 3X gt Grand parents then by their daughter then by this John who had married the widow of a nephew of my 3X gt grand parents William Giles

Now remember at the top of this lot Francis Baylis? Well this William Giles was the son of Richard Giles and Hannah BAYLIS.
So you can see we are going round in circles somewhat!
Now I need to establish for definite which pub in Abingdon was kept by William Young and were the two Baylis ladies related. That is before I start on the fact that both my mum's tree and my dad's seem to come extremely close through this trail as Eliza, John's wife and Williams widow, came from Willoughby Warwickshire where mum's Ellard  are from and her Hakesleys were from Braunston which is where Hannah BAYLIS was born.
Ooh isn't the FH trail fun

Officially going mad Hannah Bayliss was born in Broughton not Braunston and that is where mum's NEEDLES and MORBY's are from . Ricky I'm glad you are ther to ask such logical questions I'm getting a bit confused its good to have some one able to stand back and see the overall picture thank you for your support

OOOH I've just found I have already recorded Francis BAYLIS' family and she had a brother in the right place and time to be Hannah's father so that completes circle 1 and answers quest 2  Now lets get back to the pub mystery
