i have one little puzzle left with this

when my grt grandparents elizabeth galbriath married james  lafferty in greenock they were living in a very poor area

would ordinery people have thier marrige in the papers as in the case of john and nancy

they seem to have hit on hard times

im just curious as to what happened

More likely to put deaths in papers than marriages and seldom births. But then think of your local newspaper now and how many deaths appear each day compared to other events.
Also, some families were better than others about putting things in papers. The gentry, business people and professional people put notices in (and read) the papers.

that is what puzzles me when they got to greenock they were extremely poor

so they must have hit on very hard times

perhaps that is the reason for the move over to scotland

its all a mystery
