TIPPLE Family
« on: Wednesday 29 August 07 08:03 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone.  I am trying to find out what happened to the family of William and Elizabeth Tipple both born 1798 and their four children Eliza, Richard, William and Harriet.  They appear in the 1841 and 1851 census' as living in Winchethill, however after this they seem to disappear.  There is one reference to a William marrying a Harriet Walters in Brenchley in 1854 but other than this I can find any trace in the IGI.  My great great grandfather Jarvis Martin is listed as living either with them or at the next address in the 41 census aged 2 years whilst in the 51 census he is listed as their servant.  There are no sign of his parents Edward and Mary Ann Martin.  I would love to know how such a young child came to be living with them and if he was related in some way. Any suggestions.

Thanks Gwynneth

Staplehurst has an excellent website - all the parish registers have been transcribed

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~staplehurst/index.htm

Marden History Society are working on transcribing their records (no baptisms yet)

http://www.mardenhistory.org.uk/

Click on people, then choose Marden Ancestor records from the drop down menu.

Hopefully you will find out something about the TIPPLES family.

Thank you both so much.  Now that I see Elizabeth's age is given as 51 rather than her being the same age as her husband as I thought it is quite possible that she is Edward (Jarvis' father) Martins sister.  She was born in approx 1813.

Elizabeth Tipples' death registration in 1870 gives her age as 70 therefore birth year circa 1801
1871 census circa 1801
1861 census circa 1810
1851 census circa 1798
1841 census circa 1797-1801 (adult ages usually rounded down to the nearest 5 on the 1841 census).
Only on the 1861 census is the age inconsistent so that is likely to be the age which is incorrect.
The family's surname is given as Tipples on the 1841 and 1851 censuses.

Thanks Valda.  Back to square one.  Perhaps she was an aunt??  There were lots of Martins in Brenchley so it would be surprising if one of them didn't take Jarvis in if his mother had died.  Edward's father's name was Thomas and his mother was Frances Piper.  His wife was a Mary Ann Collins.  It's possible that Jarvis called one of his daughters after his grandmother.  She was my great grandmother Frances Ann Martin who was born in Goornong, Victoria Australia.   Interestingly Jarvis also married a Mary Ann (known as Ann) Collins from Horsmondon.
