John SOUTHEY
« on: Friday 17 December 04 15:21 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for some help, I have traced my family back to the early 1800s, My great great great grandfather John Southey married Louisa Thorn at Great Durnford in 1817. I am looking for any more information that might lead to me finding out where he was born, or if anyone knows how I could obtain a marriage certificate etc it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi and welcome sibbo  ;D

The marriage is noted on www.familysearch.org as:
16 NOV 1817   Durnford, Wiltshire, England.

Hope that gets you started.

Also, there is a possible birth at Amesbury which is close to Great Durnford:

Name:    Southey, John
Record Type:    Births
Quarter:    June
Year:    1894
District:    Amesbury
County:    Wiltshire

Might want to look into that.  And also check on www.ancestry.co.uk if you haven't already for any other possibilities.

Hi,

You are only able to obtain certificates for events (birth, marriage, death) from 1837 onwards.

For events prior to 1837 you will need to go to the parish records.

Family history online covers parish registers for this area, but is a pay per view site and I don't know what information you would gain. I'm not sure if it gives further details for mariage other than date and bride and grooms name.
see

Hope this gives you something to work on

Hi sibbo,

Welcome to RootsChat.

Do you know when John died?  If so, how old was he.  I would guess that he was born 1790s?  I have looked for him on the 1851 census transcript and he does not appear there, but Louisa does:

HO107/1845/107 p 2 ED1 part of parish of Durnford
Normanton
schedule 6
SOUTHEY Louisa 54 Ag. Lab. Durnford, Wilts.
John 25 Ag. Lab. Durnford, Wilts.
Henry 23 Ag. Lab. Durnford, Wilts.
Samuel 21 Ag. Lab. Durnford, Wilts.

It does not indicate unfortunately if she is a widow.  However, she is a local so maybe John was too. I have not been able to find John's baptism on BVRI2 and the FamilySearch site is currently down.  You could try that - Durnford parish registers are apparently covered by the IGI.

Hope this helps.

Nell

Thanks all,
I have tracked down all my relatives up to John Southey, I think he was my first line to live in this village trying to find a birth place for  John Southey around the turn of 1790 to 1800. Maybe I have to go and visit the parish to find out more. Once again thanks for the help.

Mark,

Very interesting that your relative married one of mine from Gt. Durnford. All my Thorn(e) ancestors are from that village!
Louisa, who was baptised 15 Jan 1797 @ Durnford married John Southey @ Durnford on 16 Sep 1817 witnessed by Ann Stride and John Hall.

John Southey witnessed the marriage of my Great Great Great Grandfather James Thorn @ Durnford on 25 Sep 1824.

Hi Andy

Interesting, as James Thorn was also my wife's direct ancestor.
