Alexander Neish/Nish family in Winnipeg - 1911 please

Hello 'Tricia, I want to sincerely thank you for your efforts on this family. Within the last day, I have made contact with yet another grand-child of this family and I am hoping that he may have additional family history pieces for this puzzle. I am beginning to wonder if the Father, Alexander Neish, didn't die in Scotland before the family came to Canada. I am going to try to find his death in Scotland after 1901 census and before November 1911 when one of the daughters married in Canada. Again, my sincerest thanks! Pat

Hello Janice M, Thank you so  much for the website information; I ran through several of them seeking "my" Alexander Neish, but, alas, he was not there.  I am going to tackle this family from another angle -- securing the marriage certificate of daughter Ellen M. Neish to see if it indicates her Father, Alexander is deceased at the time of her marriage in November 1911. I also made contact with the Neish family website to share what I have with them. Hello J.J., Sorry for the delay in responding, but I am on the road.. Ellen Mary Neish married William Amor King about 1911 in Winnipeg. I have the exact date in my other computer and can give it to you when I get home in about two days. Thanks for your interest; I am beginning to think that Ellen's Father may have died in Scotland and his widow came to Canada with their 3 daughters. New verbal information is that she operated a boarding house in Winnipeg...ANY thoughts on the Neish family would be appreciated...  Thanks,  Pat

Pat, at ScotlandsPeople - http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk - there is a death registration for an Alexander Nish, labourer, married to Mary Helen Paterson who died 17 Jul 1920 in Tongland, Kirkcudbright. His parents were listed as Alexander Nish, contractor (deceased) and Mary McDonnell (deceased). The informant was Mary Nish, half-sister. (Just in case you weren't aware, the names Ellen and Helen were often interchangable in Scotland.)

I didn't see a death for Mary Paterson Neish/Nish listed there.

Hello JacquieinCanada!  THANK YOU!!  Yes, I am 99% certain this is the Alexander Neish/Nish I seek.  Mary Patterson Neish died in Chicago, Illinois USA in the 1930's. Also, interestingly, in regard to Alexander's parents: James died 29 May 1890 in Tongueland; his wife, Mary, whom he married in Dec 1843 died in Tongueland 8 Dec 1857.  Since a half-sister, Mary, was the informant...it appears that Alexander must have remarried after his wife died. So, there are more rellies out there!!!     Again, sincere thanks for following up on this kind of old posting!  Pat

I have found some birth, death and marriage details at ScotlandsPeople which I have attached in an rtf document to this post. You can view all of the images referred to in the document at ScotlandsPeople.

It appears that Alexander Nish (the elder) remarried in 1859 in Kirkcudbright to Agnes Black.

I found the marriage registration for Alexander Nish and Mary Patterson who married in Dumfries on 24 Jun 1887. It appears that Alexander did not know his birth mother's name as he listed Agnes Black as his mother. I am certain this is the correct marriage as that date of marriage is listed on Isabella Nish's birth registration. Marriage dates were sometimes included on birth registrations to show that the couple were married.

On the death registration for Alexander Nish (the elder) in 1890 only one marriage (to Agnes Black) is referred to but the informant was his son Alexander who may not have known about his father's first wife (based on his information on his marriage registration). The parents of Alexander Nish (the elder) were listed as James Nish, farm servant (deceased) and unknown Reid (deceased).
