Richard Jenkins 1841 Tredegar
« on: Sunday 02 September 07 09:17 BST (UK) »
Dear List,

I have a Richard Jonathan Jenkins born Tredegar 1841 living in London in the 1871 census with his  profession down as civil engineer and land owner in Monmouthshire.    Where could I find out which land he owned please?

Also his place of birth says Tredegar J or IW Monmouthshire - what would those initials stand for please?

with thanks
Diana

Given his age, I would think that the land was inherited, so finding his father's will would help. Do you have his family on a census before 1871 to find his father's death?
This looks like his birth reg

Just noticed one of your other posts which gave Richard Jonathan's father's and grandfather's names. Looks more likely that he would have inherited the property from his grandfather Richard or grandmother Ann - she's a proprietor of houses on the 1851 census.
There's also the Returns of Owners of Land 1873 which lists all landowners who owned more than an acre - it's in the links at the top of this page.
