Stills Buildings, Kintore
« on: Sunday 02 September 07 10:44 BST (UK) »
Wonder if anyone could tell me where 'Stills Buildings, Kintore' were or maybe still are. Also is there any website or publication that may have a picture of them?

Many thanks

I Googled 'Stills Buildings, Kintore' and it appears that they are situated in The Square. For a photo of Kintore:  http:/www.geograph.org.uk/

You could also try www.kintore.org.uk which has a History & Family History forum.

Hi
Still's Buildings are just off the main square in Kintore. I work in the village so I took a few photos - I've attached a small one below. Send me a PM with your e-mail address and I can send the rest on to you.

There is an inscription above one of the windows which says 1879 - does this fit with your dates?

The building is apparently named after a Mr Still who was later (about 1894) the Provost of Kintore. I have a picture of him too which I can send you.

Coincidentally my GGG Grandfather was a Baker in Kintore in 1861 living in Abel's Buildings, but I haven't been able to trace that building yet.  There is a building across from Still's called the Old Bakery but I can't confirm if it is of the same era.

Cheers

Gary,

In an idle moment I recently came across the discussion about Still's Buildings in Kintore.  I'd be very interested in obtaining a copy of the photo you mentioned of James Still.  He was married to a sister (Jemima Buchan) of my gt-gt-grandfather.

Best wishes,
Graeme

I can't find anything either. My mother lived in the top floor of the tenement in 1921 and describes the following:
"At the head of the perforated iron stair was a small platform, in which stood a large iron sink with a single cold water tap. This was the communal water supply for the tenement houses above the stair and it was from this platform, using the sink as a stand for our chipped crockery mugs, that we launched our beautiful bubbles... [We] vied with each other to see whose would go furthest, whose was the biggest and who would even be fortunate enough to see one of our beautiful missiles land with a plot on the unsuspecting head of the hotel maid as she crossed the "close" en route for the byre to do the milking"
I'm guessing it was near the Kintore Arms - she also mentions commercial travellers in that connection. I suspect it no longer exists. You can do a search by place on the 1915 Valuation Rolls using Scotlandspeople (ppv). Select Aberdeen, then Kintore. Ignore names - enter Stills Buildings under Place. The 1911 Census will give an idea of where it was as well.

I realise that this was a 2007 initial post, but noticed interest today. You will find a photograph etc here.

Fantastic, thanks - when my mother saw the picture she told me who lived there in the early 1920's and this started a good reminiscence.
