McConway - 1841 Census
« on: Tuesday 04 September 07 05:16 BST (UK) »
Ann Jane Mathers (nee: McConway - as listed on her death certificate) was born c1812, we have her as marrying in c1845, Portadown, County Armagh, Ireland, but she was apparently born in Drumcliff, Sligo, Ireland.

Her death certificate doesn't give parents names, only that her fathers occupation was that of a Potter.

Any help would be most appreciated in finding the name of Ann's parents.

regards
Richard

Hi breakfree,

In the extracts of Griffiths Valuation of Ireland 1848-64 on John Hayes failteromhat.com website the McConway name only appears in Counties Derry, Donegal and Tyrone.

Thanks Christopher, this appears to be a real headscratcher this one especially given we have had her maiden name spelt 3 different ways:

McConway
McConnaway
and even Conway

cheers
Richard

Hi Richard,

What about the christian names of Ann's children ???

If she had a few of each her mother's and father's christian names might appear.

I've just looked at the 1796 Flax Growers list for Co. Sligo ... there are three Conways from Drumcliff listed

Luke, Patrick and Widow Conway

Hi Christopher,

Ann's children were:

William Henry Mathers
b: 1849, Shankill, County Armagh, Ireland
d: 1930, Hamilton, Waikato, New Zealand

John Mathers (my GG-Grandfather)
b: 1853, County Armagh, Ireland
d: 1911, Rongotea, Manawatu, New Zealand

Thomas Mathers
b: 1854, County Armagh, Ireland
d: Manchester, Lancashire, England

Joshua Mathers <--- the only one of the whole family to stay in Ireland
b: 1854, County Armagh, Ireland
d: 1926, Portadown, County Armagh, Ireland

Elizabeth Mathers
b: 1856, Portadown, County Armagh, Ireland
d: 1938, Otaki, Wellington, New Zealand

If there were any Luke's or Patrick's i'm yet to stumble across them im afraid.

Although we have no first name for her father, i've been given the birth year of 1783, Drumcliff, Sligo, Ireland and death year of 1880.

Her mother seems she may have been born in 1785, although again no first name.

cheers
Richard
