Can you read this ?

I have this 1858 marriage certificate and I can't make out what is written before the 1st witness's name (Thomas Wilson).

It looks like 3 letters, then "+" & "-".

My first thought was an army rank (Srj ?) but not certain.

Any thoughts on this ?

It's possible but it doesn't look anything like the "t" in Elizabeth.

My thinking was Srj or Srg  - for Sergant.

It's the + & - that baffles me.

Me again    do you think maybe it is not a + and a full T (t) and the ink pen maybe did'nt work as it should have

What you are looking at is an abbreviation of Sergeant written as Sergt. Very normal and at that time a universal indication of abbreviation.

Agreed, the use of J or G in SerJ/Geant  was common - and as Hack says, the abbreviation is underlined ....

Yes, the last letter is underlined as an abbreviation eg; Jas (James), Wm (William) Rt (Robert) etc.......
