I don’t want anyone to go to the trouble of doing a search for me – two have already been done in St Helier without success, but I thought it might be a good idea to post details of what I am looking for just in case anyone out there in Jersey has come across the birth of my great aunt in the course of their research.
I have the birth certificates of my grandfather and his brother, as follows:
Henry Abercromby Tagny b. 28 August 1866, St Helier, mother Maria Amelia Tagny (sic)
Ralph George Tagney, b. 17 October 1870, Trinity, mother Maria Tagney (sic).
The children’s parents weren’t married so they took their mother’s surname. They had a sister who was born between 1866 and 1870. My aunt always said she had been born in Rozel, but I understand this wouldn’t necessarily mean the village of Rozel. On the 1871 census she is called Mary (age 2) but on the 1881 census she is Minnie.
In the census returns, the children are listed under their father’s surname and were apparently unaware of the name in which they had been registered - both their parents died young and in later life they were unable to obtain their birth certificates or any formal details of their births. Only with a lot of digging, quite a lot of help and a great deal of luck was I able to discover the birth certificates of the two boys but Mary/Minnie’s birth details have never come to light.
It might be that the name/s ring a bell with someone. I know it's a long shot but I think it’s worth a try.
