William Hudson Walker / Marion Scott
« on: Friday 07 September 07 07:34 BST (UK) »
Hi.  Can anyone help please?  My g grandfather William Hudson Walker was born c. 1854 in Edinburgh.  He married a Marion Scott.  They emigrated to NZ before my grandmother was born in 1888.  I have William's apprenticeship records - they were signed by John Walker whom I assume was his father. There is a mention in the 1841 census of a William H Walker, father John which I am currently assuming is them ... but apart from that I am beginning to think he is a figure of my imagination.  I found another William Walker married to a Marion Scott but they died  in Glasgow so are a different couple.
any help - or anyone else reseraching them - would be greatly appreciated.

you say he was born in c.1854 you then stated that he was on the 1841 census? am i misreading your post? or is the birth year an educated guess.

There are only two marriages showing on Scotlands People for a William Walker and a Mar* (any first name) Scott:

1   1859   WALKER   WILLIAM & SCOTT   MARION   AIRDRIE OR NEW MONKLAND   /LANARK   651/01 0074

2   1876   WALKER   WILLIAM   & SCOTT   VIOLET MARIA   DALGETTY   /FIFE   422/00 0003

The first would be too early given the estimate on William's birth year, so that only leaves the second as an option.

Taking the first name off in the search for bride Scott, brings up only two more options - 1863/Janet and 1876/Jemima

What was William's occupation/trade?

Regards.

Monica  :)

I am new on this site and am overwhelmed with the help and the knowledge - thank you so much everyone.
The apprenticeship papers are between McDowell, Steven and Co, Iron founders in Glasgow and William Walker residing at No 154 North Woodside Rd Glasgow with the consent of John Walker (and I think the next word is Imoulder - so, Iron Moulder?) residing at No 4 Gardner (?) St as Cautioner (which I am told is the same as a guarantor).  He was appprenticed for five years "from and after the tenth day of February Eighteen Hundred and Sixty Six years".  Wages at the rate of 5 shillings per week the first year to nine shillings per week in the fourth year.

When he came to NZ, he was employed by HE Shacklock Ltd and made the Orion brand of Coal Ranges - just about everyone in NZ at the time had one!

Just wondering if Edinburgh was the proper birth place - Mum told me that but she may be incorrect as she didn't ever know him.

Cheers, Karin

Falkirk is 20 miles form Glasgow..
Also in the 1851c William (yet to be born that year..)....brother John.....16yrs....was an iron Moulder too.
in the 1861c William is 9yrs living with his mother "Mrs james Walker"
so your william may have had his brother John give his consent ..

Regarding Williams father.....via Scotlandspeople
an "inventory" for James Walker  1/4/1859.....so James would have died probably within 6months of this date....
