WW2 Photo question
« on: Saturday 18 December 04 16:55 GMT (UK) »
http://fallon.rootschat.net/grandad.jpg

At the link above there is a photo of my grandfather.  You have kindly in the past helped me piece together information on where he was stationed.

He sadly died this year so he isn't around to ask and he never like to talk about the war anyway - understandably.

Can ayone tell me about the uniform?
The signs on the door way?

Thanks in advance,
Pam

Hi Pam,

The chap in the photo is in the RAF and his rank is SAC (Senior Aircraftsman) I'm not sure about the lettering above the door though :-\,

Hope this helps,Mojo :)

Thanks for that  :D

Is it the cap badge that lets you know his position?

Hi Pam,

Other than the uniform, the big indicator is the 'three propped' propeller badges on either arm,Senior aircraftsman,no question :)

A check of RAF abbreviations might help to discover the meaning of the lettering above the door.

Good luck,

Regards,Mojo :)

It may well be in Egypt at Ta'Qali. The AM is probably Air Ministry - DW??
I know that the AMDW at Ta'qali was bombed in a German raid - also spelled Takali - perhaps you can take it from there.
Someone may also be able to tell you of the significance of the white blancoed belt. :)

Later addition; Oops - there was an RAF base also at Takali in Malta. As that was a permanent base it is more likely to be the building in the picture. Fortunately I have come acrosss the website of someone with a colossal ego and it has many pictures of him, him, him and other RAF things:

Southern or Southan [Hereford , Monmouthshire & Glos], Jenkins, Meredith and Morgan [Monmouthshire and Glos.], Murrill, Damary, Damry, Ray, Lawrence [all Middx. & London], Nethway from Kenn or Yatton. Also Riley and Lyons in South Africa and Riley from St. Helena.

I know he was based in North Africa at some point I have some photos which fits with that area.  This is all great stuff.  Thanks to both of you.

Hi Pam

I was born in Malta and know Ta Qali well.

That photo was not taken in Malta.  They did not use that type of bricks there.

I have a 'FRIENDS' private website. I showed your photo to my members and two UK members who were in Malta during WW2 , one ex RAF and one ex REME said that the photo was taken about 1951.

As for the sign on the door, one said its "VALVE CHAMBER - KEEP CLEAR"

They made other remarks about the uniform, the cap badge and the service ribbons.

I worked with AMDW ( Air Ministry Dept of Works) during 1946. They had workshops at Kalafrana and Hal Far (both Navy & RAF bases) at Luqa and Hal Safi also at Tal Handaq underground workshops and a few other locations on the Island.

Regards Bill.

Hiya Bill,

What a puzzler you've thrown me?

We were positive that he worked for De Havillands in the UK by 1951.

He did go back into the RAF after he was demobbed because he found it hard to find work.  So this is a post war photo - maybe close the time he joined back up as he seems to be proud to be in the uniform?

Thanks for taking the time to come back to me  ;D
