Allan STIRLING of Cumbernauld
« on: Friday 07 September 07 18:55 BST (UK) »
Trying to find Thomas Russell & Mary Stirling, who had a child born out of wedlock in 1817. The baptism record states the following:

"Russell, Thos & Mary Stirling had a child born in fornication, and baptised 16th Jan, called Thomas, for which Allan Stirling was sponsor"

Would that mean Allan was Mary's father or husband? Or borther? I feel if I can track down Allan, it may help me find Mary & Thomas.

It's likely that he was a rellie of some kind rellie.Have you tried the IGI for possible births of Thomas &Alan?
Was Cumbernauld the Parish of baptism or where he lived have you found him on any Censuses?

Nothing on the censuses, nothing on the IGI or Scotland's people, hence the problem. Cumbernauld was where Thomas was baptised, yes.

Hi, had a look for your Alan found qne which might be a possible

 ALLAN STIRLING b 3rd Aug 1783
                           ch 10th Aug 1783 Kirkintilloch

Can't find a marriage for him or a Mary with a father Alan. This Alan doesn't have a sister Mary either. Perhaps Alan was Mary's uncle.

I think I have better news about Mary

 MARY STIRLING = MATTHEW BARRIE
  15th Sept 1826 Cumbernauld

CHILDREN

ALLAN STIRLING BARRIE ch 15th Apr 1827 Slamannan
AGNUS BARRIE ch 17th Aug 1828 Slamannan
MATTHEW BARRIE ch 4th Apr1830 Slamannan
JAMES BARRIE ch 11th Mar 1832 Slamannan
WILLIAM BARRIE ch 18th May 1834 Slamannan
ARCHIBALD GRAHAM BARRIE ch 7th May 1836 Slamannan
ISABELLA BARRIE ch 23rd Mar 1839 Slamannan
ANDREW BARRIE ch 6th June 1841 Slamannan
         MARY BARRIE b 3rd Oct 1843
                              ch 12th May 1844 CUMBERNAULD

You will see that Mary was back in C/nauld for the christening of her youngest daughter. Not a problem a couple of hours walking I've done it a few times. A check of the 1841 census for Slamanan, Stirlingshire you may get Matthews occupation. Miner??Perhaps young Thomas was there too.

All of the above come from extracted entries on the IGI.

The only thing I saw about THOMAS RUSSELL

THOMAS RUSSELL = ELIZABETH COWIE

    12th Oct 1827 Cumbernauld

Also listed on the same date in Denny.

Both listings are submitted ( not so reliable ) However there is an extracted entry for a MARGARET RUSSELL ch 6th Nov 1837 in Denny ,parents Thomas and Elizabeth. There are several submitted entries for other childen

      Hope  this helps
                                 Val

Thanks Val, it really does, because I can get someone to confirm the records for me now I know where to look. The first child's name is the big clue here I think.

On the 1851 census, Matthew is shown as a labourer. What really interested me though was Mary's birth: 1805 in Calder, Lanark. No wonder I can't find her. Looking in the wrong place! I'll post a look-up request in Lanark.

Hi, glad I could help. Meant to mention the Mary born in Cadder, thought she was most likely one for you. Not surprised the Kirk had something to say about it,small village and her age they couldn't hide it.

Have you had any luck with Allan Stirling? I see there are a lot of submitted entries related to this family TAKE CARE ! I don't feel he was born in Cadder but I'm wrong as often as I'm right. I though Mary's son Archibald Graham might be a clue but Graham is the ms for Matthew's Grandmother.

MATTHEW BARRIE ch 2nd Sept 1792 Slamannan

Father - John Barrie
Mother - Agnes Young

Have you looked for Mary's DC, if she died after 1855 you should be able to confirm her parents names from that.

If you think I can do anything in C/nauld send me a message.

   Val

Well I've found an Allan Stirling who had a daughter Mary in Cadder in 1800. It fits too well to dismiss. So I'm going with that. Cadder is full of Stirlings and it's so close by it seems reasonable. All the submitted records are correct according to Scotland's people. All my problems now on the Stirli ng side seem to be in Cadder. Cumbernauld just isn't giving up its Russells, LOL and that's the most important line for me personally.

Me again, think this might be your Russells,

THOMAS RUSSELL ch 30th Jan1799 SLAMANNAN

 Father - Thomas Russell
 Mother - Janet Storrie

 Thomas Russell = Janet Storrie

 4th Dec 1790 Slamannan

Eight children listed to this couple on IGIs, five extracted three submitted.

Thomas and Janet -births I think are:-

THOMAS RUSSELL ch 26th Dec 1762 Slamannan

Father - John Russell
Mother - Jean Russell

This is a submitted entry so possibly they did not know her ms, or it could be two Russells marrying.

JANET STORRIE ch 4th Dec 1768 NEW MONKLAND LANARK

 Father - Andrew Storrie
Mother - Grisel Thomson ( extracted entry )

My reason for choosing this Janet was that only one of Thomas and Janet's children had a middle name, ANDREW STORRIE RUSSELL.

Yes, makes sense. All quite logical, thank you. And doesn't it drive you barking mad when the submitted records give a woman with her married name, or worse yet "Mrs William Smith". What use is that for pity's sake. I do wish they'd say "Unknown".

So, thanks again, I'll be checking this out at SP and may be back with more queries.
