Information contained on a Marriage Banns? COMPLETED
« on: Monday 10 September 07 12:13 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Was just wondering, if I was to go along to my local record office, and view the microfilm images of marriage banns, what would it be likely to tell me?

Cheers

The names of the two people wanting to marry, their status (e.g.spinster or widow), their parish of residence, the three dates when the banns were called and who called them.

Hi Paul,

What is on an actual OPR marriage/proclamation of banns entry (if that's what you are referring to) in a parish register is a lottery  ;D  That is, you don't know what information is in it until you look at it!  It might be nothing more than the bare facts included in an IGI entry - but it might have a wealth of information.  Always worth a look - even if only for the negative reason of finding that it has no further info.

What I described were the entries in the banns book, which had pre-formatted columns and was in use in most Anglican Churches from 1754 when the standard pre-formatted marriage register was brought into use.

Prior to that a blank sheet book was used for baptisms, marriages burials and banns.  In that case what was entered varied very much from church to church, as did whether they were in separate books, or one book.  Also the extent to which they were separated or mixed up varied from church to church.
