Hi Chrissey

Looks like someone else may have researching the same line. There is a submitted entry on IGI for the marriage:

JAMES LAFFARTY
Parents: DANIEL LAFFARTY and DEBORAH WILLIAMSON

Marriages: Spouse: ANN HILL
Marriage: 25 AUG 1862  Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland

In respect of Ann Hill, you also have the following submitted entry:
Death:  22 NOV 1890
Parents: ROBERT HILL  and NANCY GLOVER

You should be able to verify all this information by looking at the certs. on Scotlands People.

Regards.

Monica

Chrissey

I can see the submitted entries for their children's births in Greenock on IGI but the entries are not backed up by records on Scotlands People. Have you managed to find them on the censuses in Scotland?

The 1862 marriage on IGI also doesn't show on SP.

What bmds are you using to track the family?

Regards.

I can see a possible marriage entry for potentially James, son to James and Ann, in Greenock 1878 which shows on IGI and on Scotlands People. James's birth entry, also submitted on IGI shows in Ireland c.1859 which is what I was beginning to suspect.

I think you may find that the family and children to James and Ann were actually all born in Ireland. I can see some possible entries for some of the children in Greenock in the 1881 Census, maybe they started to come over from Ireland in the 1870s.

This could well be a perfect example of when the info you can find on IGI, which has been submitted, can be plainly wrong and misleading. You probably need to work back from the earliest verifiable source that you have for the line you are following and work back to see what is actually there. You will probably find that you hit the Irish side fairly quickly with this 1850s/60 generation of children.

Regards.

hi monica

i have james and ann as born in ireland ,and also thier son james who married elizabeth glabriath in greenock in 1878

i have the marrige cert for james and elizabeth

i do know james and ann had a daughter deborah williamson and i belive that was the name of james mother and his father was a daniel lafferty

the name deborah carried through the family

the last one being my aunt

i cant find anymore about them but there  are a lot of contradictions

it appears ann had her first child at 13

and james was much older than her

i have ann born 1839 and the first son born in 1852

which would make the greenock marrige 10 years or so after the first child

i have been using the igi

but i do have a copy of anns death cert showing she died in 1890 at greenock

its just so complicated

thanks so much for all your help

love chrissey

This looks like James and Ann in the 1881 Census:

James Lafferty    50, labourer, b. CO Donegal, Ireland
Ann Lafferty    60, b. CO Donegal, Ireland

Address: 61 Dalrymple St, Greenock West

There is no original image to view for the 1881 Census, only an index.

This looks like the death entry for Ann and the one you have details of:

1890   LAFFERTY   ANN       HILL   F   61   GREENOCK OLD OR WEST   /RENFREW   564/03 0579

From this age at death, her birth year would be c.1829 (rather than 1839) which makes sense if she started having children c. 1852.

I assume that you also have James L's death cert with parents' details (and estimate birth year).

I cannot see James or Ann on any census in Scotland before the 1881 census. Likely, as I said earlier, that (some/all) the family came over in the 1870s.

You have at least from James and Ann's 1881 census entry a place of birth in Ireland which is lucky (most times you only have Ireland and no way of knowing where they came from). Somewhere to start your searches for their family.

Regards.

Monica

On the issue of the details you are seeing on IGI, I can only repeat that use it as a guide only. There is nothing on Scotlands People that verifies the details on there. None of the children look to have been born in Scotland that I can see. So, whilst the names of the children may be correct, their place of birth (and dates?) don't look to be.

There is also no marriage showing on Scotlands People post 1855 for James and Ann. Likely that if their first child is showing as born c. 1852, they were probably married before this date in Ireland.

IGI is such a fantastic research tool, but when it comes to submitted entries, treat with care!
