Anstey PR have been checked I'm afraid...nothing likely in there! The graveyard there too, though most gravestones are older than I was looking for!

The online tree of Charles Crane follows the brother of one of my gt x 7 grandfathers, he seems to have stayed a little longer in Anstey from the baps of his children where as my ancestor was in Hunts, Northants and Beds before 1800.

It is quite a mystery!

Which means that you're firmly back in Leics in your search for William and his parents - he must be the one I found age 75 in 1861 born Ansty Leics.

Good luck

David

I should have mentioned,  but on that specific entry, it is recorded with the 6 inside brackets as:  William Lewin died 2nd Dec 18(6)3 aged 78 ; suggesting it wasn't really clear what it was.

The William you found is the grandson of the William I am searching for! The William on the 1861 was the son of Thomas Lewin and Elizabeth Atkins, it is Thomas' father I am searching for!

I have had contact with the gentleman who has the online tree which includes this Thomas but he admitted that when he was looking for his father he just took a lucky guess. Anstey PRs have been checked and wills in Leic R/O to no avail. There is no mention anywhere of this William after the burial of his daughter in Anstey in 1763. Most of the children are in Hunts by the 1780s so my guess is that William maybe passed away between 1763 and 1780, or he came to Hunts with them, or to Northants/Beds with another of his children.

This William is extremely elusive, I cannot find his wife's death either!

john & Emma,

I have been very interested in your correspondences. My great great grandfather was Henry Lewin, born in Anstey, who was referred to in Thomas Lewin's will of 1828. Henry & his brother, Thomas,  were both drapers in Kensington (I have been researching them through the censuses). Henry's other brothers were, I believe, the Swineshead Lewins William, Jonathan, John, Richard , James & Joseph.  Joseph & his sister, Sophia,  were married to brother & sister, John & Selina Astill (or Astell), who I believe were cousins, Thomas Lewin & John Astell having married Elizabeth & Fanny Atkins.

I have been using the familyseatch site for my earlier ancestors, which I know is not completely reliable, so you visits to Swineshead etc. have  been very useful.

From the censuses,

-  Henry's son Henry Thomas Lewin, had a cousin Sophia Astill,  in his household (1881 census).

- Charles Lewin, another of Henry's sons, had a cousin, Jane M Lewin (Kensington Thomas Lewin's grand daughter) , as his housekeeper (1901). Jane was  the sister of Thomas Mayes Lewin (TM Lewin Shirtmakers of London) - 1871 census.

-  1841 -  Elizabeth Lewin, age 75 and presumably Thomas's widow, was living with a Joseph Lewin (age 20), Elizabeth Lewin (age15), & William Lewin (age 5). An Anne Lewin was also present  From Familysearch, Anne may have been the son of Richard and had 2 brothers Thomas & Samuel. Do you know if this is correct & is it possible that the Lewins in the census were from the same family? An Elizabeth Kinton was also present, who would have been the daughter of Elizabeth, Henry Lewin's sister & John Kinton.

My Great Grandfather, George Lewin, married Janet Emily Kent, the daughter of industrialist & patenter of the rotary knife cleaning machine. His descendants published a book about the family, which has references to George.

In A2A, I found a reference to John Lewin retrieving his father Thomas Lewin, farmer of Tilbrooke's stolen pig (1821 app). This would confirm that he was the one who died in 1821 in Swineshead  This would mean that Charles Crane's "John Lewin" is not Thomas's son., What do you think?

If you would like to know more about my side of the Lewin family, please let me know.  I am new to Rootschat, so I apologize if I have not followed the right procedure in contacting you.
