Thanks TT and Lydart - I just couldn't resist it 

It seems to be almost a pre requisite of being a family historian - to collect someone else's junk books, documents or pictures. I don't understand how they can throw those precious items away   

Makes me sad to think someone else is missing their family heirlooms and memoribilia.

My oddest piece of 'memorabilia' is a rusting jagged piece of metal, about 3 inches long.  It was part of the shrapnel from the bomb that fell near my mother in the blitz and ruptured her ear-drum.

How weird is that !

Lydart that is lovely..in a weird sort of way...We have a decorated truncheon with the name C. S. Todd dated V.R. ...1869...try as I might...I can find no family connection despite it being in the family for years...perhaps it was acquired and just used for protection

Can you imagine in years to come one of your descendants will be trying to find out who this couple is in your tree if you don't leave a note with it 

maybe thats how the truncheon came about
