Can anyone help me
« on: Thursday 13 September 07 20:53 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find out the birth date of John Reilly.

This is the obituary of his son James O'Reilly taken fom a South African newspaper:

The 'O' in the surname seems to be optional. John is always known as plain Reilly in his various military documents.

Presumably, the scribbled pencil note of 'born 1842' means that this clipping is from 1907.

Apparently, John had about 11 children, the eldest of whom was William. William fought in the Zulu wars and settled down in South Africa where John joined him. Hence the South African connection.

It'd be great if someone can help.

Just for information, the "gallant six hundred" refers to the charge of the Light Brigade at the battle of Balaclava in 1854

IGI shows a marriage c1820 Baltinglass, Kildare of John Reily (born c1795 Baltinglass) to Alice (born c1798 Baltinglass).
IGI shows a marriage c1840 Baltinglass, Kildare of John Reilly (born c1815 Baltinglass) to Mary

Thank you both.
