Hi Skippy

At first sight I had the same thoughts as Philip.  The book the older lady is holding suggests she is literate.

I would put the two younger girls as sisters as they are wearing the same outfit.  The other girl doesn't look old enough to be their mother, plus from what I can make out she is not wearing a wedding band.  ???

I agree that girl/lady at the back is not old enough to be mother - and Sheila just pipped me to the post about the wedding ring!

Also agree with Philip that the seated lady bears no resemblance. I like the governess theory.

But then, some rellies do bear no resemblance to others, so who knows!

Skippys original post said there was an elder sister - as she thought she may be the girl sitting.
I would suggest that the standing girl at the back is the older sister, and that we are asking if there was a younger sister who is the sitting girl.

Or, following on from the governess theory, maybe a cousin or other close rellie who shared the governess with the family

Hi.

Nice restore Smurf, Thanks.

Grandmothers only older sister was b. last qtr 1893 (she also had 2 younger sisters
b.1903 & 1905). Gran was b. Mar 1897 so just over 3 yrs between them. The
girl standing to me looks more than 3yrs older than Grandmother.
I've checked dob's of any possible Aunts and nearest was b. 1872.
Have yet to trace Aunts/Uncles children so JC's theory may be correct.
Gt Grandmother was born in Roscommon, Ireland and I would almost definately say
the family didn't gave a governess.

Any further thoughts welcome,

Thanks,

Skippy

Skippy,

You don't suppose your grandmother was the older girl standing?
If the picture was taken c1913
Your gran born 1897 would have been 16-17
girl seated born 1903 age  10
youngest daughter born 1905 age 8
mother born 1865 age 48

sorry if this  causes any doubt over who your grandmother was

The lace collars the children are wearing look the same as the ones in photos dated as 1912 here:

China, I was thinking 1911/1912 also.  Going off the dark dresses, collars and the girls hairstyles, sporting large ribbons.   :-\
