Hi Lorraine

With the variances on age and range of spelling variants, it is always worthwhile double checking on Scotlands People which allows better for wildcards on spellings than Ancestry's index.

Searching the 1841 census for a R*b*rt Sl*m* (lots of wildcards!) any age only brings up 11 entries with a large variation on the surname.....none in Ayrshire unfortunately.

Have you looked for his death cert? Assuming he died in Scotland, his death cert. would confirm his parents' names, if known to the informant. This would hopefully make it easier to find him in 1841 and trace his parents and siblings.

Regards.

Monica

PS. The only entry I can see at present coming up close is for a William Slymon in Girvan, a cotton hand loom weaver age 15

Hi Lorraine

This looks a possible for Robert's death on Scotlands People:

1875   SLIMON   ROBERT    63   GIRVAN   /AYR   594/00 0103

His death cert should confirm:

- Age at death (as above)
- Name of his wife, including her maiden name and show whether she was still alive (widower of or married to)
- Address and time/cause of death
- His occupation
- Name of his parents and maiden name of mother (if known to the informant) including father's occupation
- name and relationship of informant

There are other entries but this was the most obvious one.

Regards.

Lorraine

If Robert's cert is hard to read, you can contact Scotlands People on this link www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/content/help/index.aspx?r=1210 If you include your details and the refs for his death cert. and explain that the image is faint/illegible, they will send out to you a paper copy which in most cases is much easier to read. They are very quick on responding to this type of contact.
