Kirkmaiden (McCulloch)
« on: Monday 17 September 07 16:05 BST (UK) »
I've had a lot of help from Gadget on this line of my family, and it occurred to me I should really post here as we moved county during the discussion. Does anyone have 18th century Kirkmaiden ancestors/expertise? We've got a bit of a puzzle. One Jacobina McCulloch (married John Lightbody in 1785) occasionally known as Robina...this also seems to happen in other families, anyone know why? The only baptism we can find is for "Binea". Does anyone know of a historical or local reason for this name discrepancy?

Hi All

No idea as to the history of the name variants, but looking at www.whatsinaname.net and searching for Robina brings up: Jacobina > Robina > Bina >

Not clear how they connect but certainly search result certainly indicates some connection.

Yep, can't always explain these things, just have to accept them. Jacobina is a bit of a mouthful, not really a pretty name. If I'd named a child after a relative and got stuck using that, I'd have shortened it for everyday use too!!
