Belfast, which county?
« on: Monday 17 September 07 18:58 BST (UK) »
Hello all, I notice in the top of the Ireland RC board that Belfast is in Antrim county, but the 1851 Antrim census on Ancestry doesn't seem to list any Campbells in Belfast, which is where my lot supposedly came from. Has the county boundary shifted since then? Thanks.

Cheers,
China

Only a small portion of 1851 census for Co. Antrim survived. See here for bits that are available:
www.census-online.com/links/Ireland/Antrim

Often references to 1851 census are actually bits contained in pension applications.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hiya China,

There was a recent discussion regarding the county in which Belfast is located on Belfast Forum's Dundonald Village .. East Belfast thread. All the city and most of the suburban areas are now in Co. Antrim.

Thank you very much, both, quite helpful. It was a very long shot actually, as the earliest birth date I have seen for the person is 1852 :(

Interesting description of Belfast from the 1832 Parliamentary Boundaries Act in the second link...mentions Mr Campbell and his Cotton Works! :D
