TARR of Bampton
« on: Sunday 19 December 04 10:53 GMT (UK) »
Wondering if anyone can help with my brick wall here  :)

I can't find any birth information about William Tarr.  The first entry I have for him is in 1851 when he appears in Kingston, Somerset as a Tanner. He seems, from that census and later ones, to have been born about 1823 in Bampton. His marriage certificate doesn't state a father, so I assume he was illegitimate.

Unfortunately, according to the Devon Record Office, the parish records for Bampton at that period were lost years ago. Devon FHS did a lookup of Tarrs across Devon Parish Records, but nothing promising.  :(

My only hope is that he might have still been in the Bampton area in 1841, although I would have thought it unlikely. Since he had a trade, are there apprenticeship records of any sort?

Any help anyone can offer will be VERY gratefully appreciated as William is driving me nuts!

Thanks

Angela

You have probably seen this but there is a William Tarr c. 25 Apr 1824 in Knowstone, Devon (near Bampton I think).  Father James Tarr, Mother Ann.
on www.familysearch.org.  There are some other possibilities if you haven't checked there already.

Jonathan

Thanks very much for looking, Jonathan. Unfortunately, I don't think he can be the right one as they both seem to appear in the 1881 census :(

My William seems to be just a touch older (perhaps - but of course census ages are so dodgy!)

Please keep any more ideas coming!

Thanks again

Angela
