Stone cutters records

Every genealogist looks for gravestones but has anyone enquired where the stone cutters records are? These records, if they still exist, should contain a wealth of information.

I am also looking for masons....some old stones do have the cutters name at the bottom of the stones...but not all.

and I am also not sure where to start looking for the records
