Schaub/ Lowe 1881 - 1901
« on: Wednesday 19 September 07 06:18 BST (UK) »
Tricky questions here if anyone could help, it would be greatly appreciated..........

Story so far...........

Walter William LOWE is born March 1861 in Lancashire, UK. He beomes a tinman and then a stationer's assistant. He leaves the UK after the 1881 census and appears back in the UK in 1901.

In the 1901 census he is married to Alma who is born in Iowa USA about 1864. Her sister is also on the census Ida Elizabeth SCHAUB, married aged 27 (I am hoping that she is NOT married and that the surname is the same as her sister), also born Iowa USA. They both have a notation of BS next to their names, and I am thinking that may be British Subject.

Also on the 1901 census are the children of Alma and Walter...Walter 12, Robert 10, Alma 3, Joseph 2 all born in Rosario, Rep of Argentina.

Okay, I have checked Ellis Island, thinking that Walter MAY have gone to the USA before Argentina, but cannot find him there. So I assume that he went straight to Argentina and met his wife there.

Is it possible to find Alma and/or her sister leaving the USA? Or anything about them at all?

Long shot........... but worth asking.........

Thank you

1880 U.S. Census- Des Moines, Polk, Iowa:
Otta SCHAUB 39 photographer b.Prussia
wife Bettie 30 b.Sweden
dau. Alma 7 b.Iowa
dau. Ida 5 b.Iowa
son George 4 b.Iowa

Looks like Alma was born c1873 not c1864.

Wondering whether Walter Lowe could have been married twice as there is approx. 7 years between birth of Robert (c1891) and Alma (c1898).
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Wow. Thank you so much.

Yeah, a second marriage is quite possible noting the kids ages. But it looks like all happens in Argentina......

But at least we have Alma and that is just brilliant.

Found some of them on www.findmypast.com index leaving U.K. (sorry I don't have a subscription to get more details):
1900 Alma Lowe (age 3) and WALKER Lowe (age 31) Liverpool to Rosario, Argentine
1903 Joseph Lowe & Alma A. Lowe (no ages given) Liverpool to Buenos Aires, Argentina).

Could be others in the index but came up with these 4 to start.

Thank you again. I was concentrating on his first leaving of Liverpool which would have been before 1890 and not on the findmypast site, so I missed the later leavings.......

Very interesting and I shall top up my credits and see what I can get from that.
Thank you

Am posting on behalf of my parents. My grandmother was Alma Lowe  (the one aged 3 in the 1901 census). My parents would be interested (and so would I!) of any further info you have on Otto Schaub as they have drawn something of a blank on him.

Regards

Hello Chubbfrisky
Otto Schaub was my great grandfather too.
He was born 1841 in Breslau, Prusia; went to Des Moines, IO, USA. There he married 06 Nov 1872 Britta Elizabeth Nielsen (from Sweden) and died 1881.
Alma Annette Schaub was his daughter. She, her mother Britta and her brother George settled 1895 in Rosario, Argentina, where she married Walter Oldfield Lowe in 1896.
Alma Martha Lowe was born in Rosario 2/7/1897.
1900 the whole  family settled in Liverpool.
Alma Martha has been a skilled pianist and famous opera vocalist in Liverpool.

Dear Chubbfriski, your posting is quite old, I noticed.
I'm new in this site and still not familiar with it. If you are still there and still interested, please let me know it. I'll be happy to provide you with the information I've gathered
Best Regards

Dear Sucher,

To be honest I'd forgotten I'd made the post and only remembered when the site sent me an e-mail. My Dad (Alma's eldest son) is still alive - he will be 90 in November but is beginning to suffer from Dementia. I've copied your posting and sent it over to my parents. The dates you mention fit. Alma died in 1944

It would be good to know what you've found and we can compare notes

kind regards
